# Haven't seen the film yet
meant to, but didn't. better than the book?
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 22:52, archived)
# better than the book?
are you mental? it could never be. And wasn't. Not by a long way.
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 22:54, archived)
# Because, of course
it's the film of the book?
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 22:55, archived)
# to be sure
The film was mildly amusing; the only thing of book-quality was Stephen Fry's narration of text taken verbatim from the book. The rest of the film was fairly average.

Better than the telly series though...

# The TV series wasn't bad at all
You just had to realise that it was little more than an attempt to act out the radio series with the same actors and a very small budget.
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 23:04, archived)
# There is only one version of HitchHilkers
The original radio series. Everything else is just other stuff (tm).
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 23:09, archived)
# To an extent but the books and radio series went off in different directions
after a while.
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 23:10, archived)
# Especially
the crappy recent radio series rehash, with obligatory "happy ending" :(
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 23:14, archived)
# It was great to hear Mark Wing-Davey in the role of Zaphod again
He didn't look the part in the TV series but his voice and the way he played the character was 100% what Zaphod should be. Plus it made up or the shitty casting for Ford in the movie.

# They made a book out of it?
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 22:57, archived)
# ha!

# I am in a reasonably fit state of mind tonight
but shall take your advice, and get the DVD at the earliest opportunity

# Not quite the book
Definately Douglas Adams
Great Film
Not what most expect
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 22:54, archived)
# Not even close but still fairly good
Well... probably better than the 5th book but that was pretty crap anyway.
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 22:54, archived)
# Some good bits
but he himself admitted he wrote it during a really crap time in his life.
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 22:57, archived)
# I can imagine, it is a little... flat.
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 22:58, archived)
# ie
while he was dying?
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 22:59, archived)
# Gotta love the fact he died in a health spa
Very Adams really. Kinda like the fact the best and last Dr Who episodes he ever wrote never got shown.

# Shada
AICMFP

# Was that the "secret footage"
that made its way into "The Five Doctors"?

[/was about eight, but fancied Leila Ward]
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 23:11, archived)
# Yep, the very same
Shada was fun. There's a luke-warm radio recreation of it with Paul Megane you can get on bbc.co.uk but it's not great.
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 23:14, archived)
# yes.
In the sense that we're all dying every day.
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 23:01, archived)
# seeing as he didn't write half of it, due to being dead

# ...'Mostly Harmless' was published in 1992...
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 23:06, archived)
# Noooo...
You're thinking of "The Salmon of Doubt". The 5th book was "Mostly Harmless".
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 23:06, archived)
# no i'm not, i just got confused
I was talking about the film
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 23:07, archived)
# Adams didn't write any of the film
He just oversaw the early scripts and ideas as far as I'm aware. (Well, there were of course the directly ripped-from-the-book/radio bits but you get the idea.)
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 23:07, archived)
# I didn't even bother.
No way could it live up to what was in my head.
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 22:55, archived)
# Nah...
not near as good as the book.

Though it would be nice if they made "The Restaurant at the end of the Universe"
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 22:55, archived)
# fuck no
(, Wed 30 Nov 2005, 22:56, archived)
# 42?
