There was an 'issue' regarding licensing: but if you can still find it "newkind" was VERY true to the original. Good on 'IBM/PC' , Linux, BSD ... probably easiest to find the PC version.
It was reverse engineered from an image of the BBC Master version (i.e. filled polygons!) but without all the retro-rockets nonsense of later (read lesser) versions. :)

It also gives me a rare chance to post a pic of my pride and joy...

Still think the original BBC Micro version was the best though.
Still got fond memories of that gut wrenching adrenaline rush when the Thargoids dragged you out of hyperspace and you spent the next few minutes going 'ahh! shit! shit! aargh! holy crap!' and frantically trying to avoid getting pulverised.
