am i right in thinking you're:
creating an image
overlaying the kittin
taking into consideration height and width of text box
drawing speech bubble
putting text in over it?

Sort of.
I get the height of the truetype text boundary box (the width is fixed). For the wrapping I used some code I got off the PHP site and modified it so that it actually worked. I couldn't be bothered to spend half a day working out how to wrap ttf text.
Once I work out the height of the text I create an image that height + the height of the kittin image + some gaps. I then draw the speechbubble to surround the text, fill it in with the background colour.
I then stick the text on, load in the kittin and copy it onto the text image.
I then squirt it out as a GIF.
Hurrah!

They don't like to refer to their humble origins. I think it doesn't really stand for anything these days, or if it does it's something like Pre-Hypertext Processor.

I love strips with Kat and Leonard in them! \o/
And I love you too, JJ!*
*In a purely platonic manly way of course.
