Better than the suggestion board.

that way, if it's shit we can just blame The Great Architect and Monkeon.

and get a member of the public to choose a challenge, they could then be given honorary b3ta membership.

YES!
Or just ask Zoo magazine what sort of thing they want to see in next week's issue.

then leave /board to do the clever stuff.

Only allow people with icons to post in the compo?
Not allow compo entries to start a new thread?
Clear the image challenge suggestion board each Wednesday and start from scratch and rely on votes to select the next compo?

A 'see the popular posts' link on the compo suggestion board, the same as there is on the compo pages themselves.

I vote Afinkawan as compo monitor from now until the next
revolt?
who's with me?

but at least that will show they are interested enough in the site to join in properly, not just post shit because they are bored at school.

with a /board post count of greater than 5000 or something to post in the compo. that should be long enough to weed out the turds who post for the hell of it.
Plenty of other message boards limit who can start a new thread. If any message containing a picture got an 'I Like This' button then anyone could post a picture, but not everyone could start a new thread with one. As soon as you get a picture on the popular page, you are allowed to start new threads or something.
I'm just waffling now, someone stop me.

I like the open nature of b3ta - the problem is the compo, not the users

But if the people who could start new threads were restriced, you wouldn't have so much crap flushing everything else off the board. Every now and then you'd get a compo thread and loads of people would post their entires in it as it was a related thread?
I did say I was just waffling.

i now quite like the idea of internet wizardry the final solution

Maybe do some sort of internet wizardry type stuff and set the board to automatically start a compo thread once an hour (or just have a mod do it) and it's only when replying to that thread that it lets you choose to make your post a compo entry?
That would keep them all in one place, allow people to post whatever crap they wanted, not speed the board up too much and be easy to hide for anyone who hates the compo!
IT'S THE PERFECT SOLUTION!
But will no doubt turn out to be completely impossible.

Christ man. I feel all unloved. We quiet people are worthy too!

Thinking about it, I prefer the getting an image onto the popular page as the threshold.

gives you a chance to have a bit of a think and come up with something good, that's not just off-the-top-of-your-head obvious. But not long enough to get seriously bored.

i vote for a weekly compo chosen by vote from a list posted on a board only talk and links ever look at.
