# I got an email from fraser asking me how I would change the comp for the better
I know the easy answer is you not picking it...but that wouldn't be nice as he seems like a nice chap :)

any ideas?
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:44, archived)
# 1) Remove compo
2) Select better one from question page
3)...
4) Profit

# Mystery Bob
...and returning to the weekly Suggest a Compo and Vote on it system.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:45, archived)
# I also miss the weekly vote
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:47, archived)
# Not sure why, but I think the weekly "Quick! Brainstorm!" approach works well.
Better than the suggestion board.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:48, archived)
# ^
then we only have ourselves to blame
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:47, archived)
# Perhaps the winner of each week's compo should be able to select the next week's compo from the suggested list
that way, if it's shit we can just blame The Great Architect and Monkeon.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:53, archived)
# i think fraser should just wander out onto the street wednesday lunchtime
and get a member of the public to choose a challenge, they could then be given honorary b3ta membership.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:01, archived)
# Hahaha!
YES!

Or just ask Zoo magazine what sort of thing they want to see in next week's issue.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:06, archived)
# much better.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:08, archived)

# just like the goverment!
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:51, archived)
# but talk and links look at that page more than us i guess
then leave /board to do the clever stuff.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:54, archived)
# Erm...
Only allow people with icons to post in the compo?

Not allow compo entries to start a new thread?

Clear the image challenge suggestion board each Wednesday and start from scratch and rely on votes to select the next compo?

(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:47, archived)
# these all sound good
also only allow iconers to suggest compos too
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:48, archived)
#
A 'see the popular posts' link on the compo suggestion board, the same as there is on the compo pages themselves.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:49, archived)
# now we're cooking with gas

I vote Afinkawan as compo monitor from now until the next
revolt?

who's with me?

# I DEMAND A RECOUNT
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:55, archived)
# I was disqualified from voting because I am a hedgehog
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:03, archived)
# Well the next revolt is likey to be in about 5 days time, so OK then.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:06, archived)
# and bring back compo judging!
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:52, archived)
# I think the icon thing is a bit harsh..there's some talented skint people on here ;)
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:50, archived)
# They only have to donate £2 once to get an icon
but at least that will show they are interested enough in the site to join in properly, not just post shit because they are bored at school.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:52, archived)
# Or only allow people
with a /board post count of greater than 5000 or something to post in the compo. that should be long enough to weed out the turds who post for the hell of it.

Plenty of other message boards limit who can start a new thread. If any message containing a picture got an 'I Like This' button then anyone could post a picture, but not everyone could start a new thread with one. As soon as you get a picture on the popular page, you are allowed to start new threads or something.

I'm just waffling now, someone stop me.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:57, archived)
# I don't think images quality is always related to post count
I like the open nature of b3ta - the problem is the compo, not the users
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:59, archived)
# Same here
But if the people who could start new threads were restriced, you wouldn't have so much crap flushing everything else off the board. Every now and then you'd get a compo thread and loads of people would post their entires in it as it was a related thread?

I did say I was just waffling.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:04, archived)
# that would only work if the i like this button was added to replies
we get some damn fine noobs and infrequent posters from time to time.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:07, archived)
# I think I mentioned that.
EVERY post that contains an image should have an 'I Like This' button.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:11, archived)
# yes you did, sorry i missed it
i now quite like the idea of internet wizardry the final solution
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:18, archived)
# If I waffle for long enough
normally something reasonable comes out eventually.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:19, archived)
# OR...
Maybe do some sort of internet wizardry type stuff and set the board to automatically start a compo thread once an hour (or just have a mod do it) and it's only when replying to that thread that it lets you choose to make your post a compo entry?

That would keep them all in one place, allow people to post whatever crap they wanted, not speed the board up too much and be easy to hide for anyone who hates the compo!

IT'S THE PERFECT SOLUTION!

But will no doubt turn out to be completely impossible.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:09, archived)
# I like the cut of your jib :)
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:03, archived)
# 5000?!
Christ man. I feel all unloved. We quiet people are worthy too!
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:03, archived)
# It was just a number off the top of my head.
Thinking about it, I prefer the getting an image onto the popular page as the threshold.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 12:04, archived)
# if they were that talented...
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:52, archived)
# would a fortnightly compo be any better?
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:48, archived)
# No!
Just... because.

# your objection sounds resonable
how about daily.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:52, archived)
# I reckon weekly is about right
gives you a chance to have a bit of a think and come up with something good, that's not just off-the-top-of-your-head obvious. But not long enough to get seriously bored.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:55, archived)
# your objection sounds reasonable
i vote for a weekly compo chosen by vote from a list posted on a board only talk and links ever look at.
(, Fri 22 Jun 2007, 11:57, archived)
# ask him to peruse the most popular suggested ideas
then fro mthen pick one that wouldn't be fucking shit
or ask him to ask someone else to pick one

Cos this compo we should change the theme to "computer errors in real life"
