but the company that made the technology wanted to update it rather a lot, meaning consumers had to buy ad dons if they wanted to play the latest games, which is just as bad as buying another system

I loved mine, it was the betamax of consoles. A superior machine, but playstation won on volume of games released.

If the net gets fast enough and reliable enough you could have all the processing done remotely and essentially have an interactive video feed (like the PSP/PS3's remote play, but bigger).
Then the home console bit would be really cheap and wouldn't need upgrading either.
