I am an idiot. Right. That's that out of the way. I kinda like the stuff that is put on here as 'vectorized'. This didn't turn out anything like what you peeps do. I tried selecting different areas according to shade and painting them but that really did look a right disaster. This is just desaturated (except for the eyes) and then rasterized as a logo rather than a photo. My question is this - what in the name of jumping Jesus should I be doing?!

So that's pretty much a filtered version of a vector, right?

Buggered if I know! Sorry. I am probably wasting you good folks time. I'll google inkscape later and see what it's all about. Thanks for that. :)

I don't like that tutorial.
No particular reason why, I just don't like it.

but it could be.
But it's also not how I'd do a vector anyway.

I'll look at that tutorial anyway. Some sense of what I need to do must be better than none. Thanks for that er thingummywatchaname* (sorry hit reply before registering siggies). Now for a ciggie and so to bed. Nytol!

And also, here is a psd of a vector I did recently.
Not my usual style, but I wanted to try one of Logovend's 7-shape vectors and they're pretty good :D

like Adobe Illustrator, Corel Xara or Inkscape. The images are created using spline based tools that remain perfectly smooth no matter how far you zoom in.
A normal Paint, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro image (and the one you've drawn) is called a Raster image. it is simply made up of pixels.

Thanks for that. I thought they were just different terms for the same thing. D'uh!

two completely different ways of creating an image.
like calculating mathematically versus throwing paint at a canvas

but they're not as powerful as in illustrator, and tend to be horridly anti-aliased

a vector is always perfectly anti-aliased
and I know (or I thought that) Photoshop has vector capabailities, Paint Shop Pro does, but why confuse matters when writing a very simple explanation?

if it's made in photoshop it's called a Vexel and can't be resized without loss to the image
if it's made in Illustrator then it's a true vector and can be resized to the size of the moon without loss to the image!

Paths, for example, and text are still vectors even in photoshop, you see.

Vector paths doesn't make them fucking vector images for the last time,
photoshop makes Vexels
Vector + Pixel = Vexel.

You can't make a vector graphic, but Photoshop DOES use vectors.

the only thing that's close to a vector in photoshop is the text, that's it!
NOTHING ELSE.

And I did say the text, didn't I?
And paths are vectors until you stroke/fill them.

"Paths, for example, are still vectors"
No they aren't, a vector, in this context is the spline based coloured-in result that makes a vector image. As opposed to a Raster Image
A path is a path, yes it's spline based with bezier controls, but IT IS A PATH!!!

do we get a prize for simply trying to help you understand the difference in terminology of something?

its a path that Photoshop at some point will colour in.
Vectors are the finished line, exportable as a vector image like an swf or svg file (not a raster one)
slightly pedantic but very true
