but when you say 'improve the quality' would it not be simple to make all the lines into selections, convert to paths then stroke the selections with various brush parameters to get a clean, crisp line art?

and helps to turn my crude tracing into half-decent line art with the minimum off effort.

I'm going to do another picture like the Watchmen one but this time I'm going to record video and screenshots to create a 'tutorial' ( more a "this is what i do, some technique might be useful to you" than any kind of tutorial, as I'm no expert nor do I work traditionally ) for tattyworld and that will include sketch to line-art in that.

As I say it gets very quick once you get used to it. I now have action scripts set up with my 3 main brushes on F2, F3, F4 and now all I do is draw a quick path and press a function key, this strokes the path with the line I want and deletes the work path ready for the next line, nice and quick.
It's a technique that would work very well for your sketches if you wanted to move on into line and colour with them.

I'll look into the technique over the next couple of days, and wait with bated breath for your tutorial :)
I'm normally not neat and tidy with the sketches on purpose, but sometimes it's really because I can't be arsed being tidy.

I've never looked at it. I've only just taught myself to paint with tattyshop having used Painter for ages.
When I get around to installing CS4 and seeing if I like it ( I did not like illustrator cs3 and still use cs2 a lot ) I might let you have my old CS3 creative suite.

photo sketch is to open the levels and bring the black and white sliders together for a whiter paper and darker lines. then if you make a path over your lines ( by mouse, pen or selection ) choose a hard round brush, give it some pressure fade and then stroke the path with it you can get a line that looks like it was hand inked.

well enough. I just like to have an element of control over my lines so it looks like I drew it. which I do, I just don't draw it in a single stroke. Tutorial I linked above explains it better than me. I'm too sober to be eloquent tonight.

EDIT: Will there ever be an anime as good as Escaflowne again?
"You are my brother; we share the same blood. This world is difficult for a... gentle soul such as yours to bear. This world, where man fights against man - no, where every living thing fights to take the life of another! We kill beasts, we kill dragons, we even kill men! Fighting begets fighting, and the slaughter begins anew - such is the way of the world."
