# TJ.
Rrrraarrrrgh! Reinstallation rage. Fifth time I've had to reinstall Windows XP in the last two months. Different thing each bloody time as well. Just as well I've got the craptop as a spare.
Anyone care to explain how I go about sorting out Linux and how it works?
(, Fri 10 Apr 2009, 17:50, archived)
# XP isn't that bad. What hardware are you running?
What sort of things go wrong?
(, Fri 10 Apr 2009, 17:52, archived)
# Dunno.
It's an Acer 1310, so not the world's most up-to-date, but I seem to get driver issues. then half the NT Kernel stuff dies. It was abolutely fine until someone from work installed something. Hopefully this time'll it'll be ok...

# I'd think about an upgrade. Linux and variants take a lot of getting used to, by comparison Windows is an absolute breeze.
If you go for it though, dual-boot with XP.
(, Fri 10 Apr 2009, 18:06, archived)
# Aye
Dual-boot was the plan.

# if you install ubuntu over xp, it will walk you through the repartitioning in a nice helpful way
defrag your hard drive under xp before you start though, if i recall there are occasional bugs if you don't
(, Fri 10 Apr 2009, 18:11, archived)
# I might just do that.
Might have to wait until Tuesday as I don't have a cd writer and I'm not sure it takes USB devices as a bootable option on that thing.
(, Fri 10 Apr 2009, 18:19, archived)
# you did what with the what now?
I've still got a 2nd hard drive to fit into my comp..no idea if I need a special cable or what not
(, Fri 10 Apr 2009, 17:56, archived)
# If it's a SATA drive you'll just need a SATA cable, and a spare power source from your PSU.
(, Fri 10 Apr 2009, 18:04, archived)
# no idea

I build the rest of the fricking thing..but hard drives I'm lost,

think it's IDE?
www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136109
so basically I'm going for
DVD/RW
DVD ROM
Hard drive 1
and new hard drive
(, Fri 10 Apr 2009, 18:13, archived)
# Well, you'll need to set it as a slave drive. But other than that, it should be a simple cord from the motherboard, and one from the PSU.
(, Fri 10 Apr 2009, 18:26, archived)
# Get a bootable distro and play with that
Or grow boobs and play with them instead.

Boobs have shitty wi-fi connectivity though.
(, Fri 10 Apr 2009, 17:57, archived)
# hell no
if xp is too much work, linux is not going to help you. download the latest ubuntu live cd and play around with it, but don't expect it to be easier because it just won't

disclaimer: i run ubuntu on everything, i only boot into xp when i'm testing software or websites on it

# It's not that i find myself permanently baffled.
Just hacked off with having to go in to the repair console and type out page after page of commands to replace damaged files. Seems to happen most often after it downloads something from MS Update.

# 3 point plan
1. Turn off the computer for now and forget about it
2. Get a nice glass of beer/wine etc of your choosing
3. Fuck.

Once you've followed this 3 point plan, it won't seem like such a big deal. :D
