# We had a lecture from a very-well known chemist the other month
about the future of book. Basically, he turned out to be a money-grabbing twonk who wants the entire second-hand book market closed down and he's clamouring for changes in copyright law so that when you buy a book, you don't actually own it.
He's trying to get his publisher to switch production to e-books that have limited licences so you have to renew it every year or term, but also so that the basic format is the bare minimum and you have to pay extra for answer to excercises, etc.
I said to him that it would only favour the richest students and he told me that education shouldn't have to be fair.
Cunt.

# What a twat.
People like him are why society has gone to shit.
(, Sat 6 Jun 2009, 12:25, archived)
# Yeah, but he gets enough hero worship from every other professor.
Because he's actually been heard of...
I was very tempted to report him for copyright infringement after he ripped off a section of a film for his talk.
(, Sat 6 Jun 2009, 12:28, archived)
# Haha!
Would that have wiped the smug grin off his cuntish face, though?

See, I haven't even seen him and I passionately dislike him.
(, Sat 6 Jun 2009, 12:30, archived)
# did he write one of the well known introductory 1st year chem texts?
and despite the fact that I like educational elitism in terms of effort, that is an extremely prickish attitude.

Mostly in phys. chem., but recently branched out in other fields - one his latest was savaged for the vast number of mistakes.

(, Sat 6 Jun 2009, 13:06, archived)
# Aww, it'll get there.
Mind you, it's different in different fields. I've heard in physics one evry couple years ain't bad, but in other things, you need four a year or more.
(, Sat 6 Jun 2009, 13:08, archived)
# I'm in maths now, where everyone gets away with 1 a year
(i'm a 1st year phd student so I'm pretty lucky to have what I've got)

in fields like optics/plasma, you'd need 4 to survive because if you don't publish, the ARC hates you.
(, Sat 6 Jun 2009, 13:11, archived)
# I've just been lucky in the fields of research I'm in.
Lucky all round, really. I'm supposedly the youngest postdoc ever to have started at Bern and I managed to get a wodge of papers from my Ph. D. It was very odd giving undergrad lectures to people older than me.
(, Sat 6 Jun 2009, 13:18, archived)

how can i make money off the idea without needing it to actually perform?
