Edit: also, moths aren't attract by lights, they use the moon's beams to navigate, since at such a distance the moonbeams are almost straight. When there is an artificial source of light, they become very confused, as the light beams are curvier, causing them to fly in ever decreasing circles until they dunt off the lightbulb/get fatally burnt on the candle and etc and yadda and that.

due to the proximity of the light source,
as one travels a path that passes said light source, the angle at which the light from said source strikes ones body changes perceptibly more than it would if said light source were a great distance away.
