It even managed to slightly thaw my cold, dead heart.

A true story? Beautiful tragedy? Bittersweet? The most sad story ever told?
Or should I refer you to this:

which stops me immediately thinking of middle aged housewives and accounts clerks going all dewey eyed over it.
And it's written in a style that implies some form of geniune sincerity, rather than the usual glurge you get.

But I'm pretty sure "Mom" is an NPC in the game as well, so that guy is gonna be receiving stuff from beyond the grave if he keeps on playing.

It's actually a joke - if you don't play the game for a few months you get a whole heap of letters from 'Mom'.
It's a funny story, not a sad one.
