This is a link post Kermode on Fred
In tears by the end of this, I should probably get help

This is a normal post Yeah but he thinks Blade Runner is better with Deckard being a replicant.
This invalidates Kermode's judgement on ANYTHING. EVER.

This is a normal post the book is just as ambiguous, ain't it?
it's been a few decades since i read it now, tho...

This is a normal post Nope. The book is pretty clear on the fact that Deckard's human. The Mercerism Empathy Box doesn't work on androids.

Too meandering to be truly great but destined to be a classic none the less.

I googled it. Now my life is worse.

(Also, he looks a bit like Hexachordal, no?)

This is a normal post Kermode has always been up his own arse.
Praises the most boring or irritating life-wasting films that he's being paid to sit and watch then shows himself up as a massive hypocrite on anything that's actually popular.

One moment he's saying High School Musical is a good film on its own terms as it sets out to entertain, but then says Transformers relies too much on 'special effects and explosions' - well, not to put too fine a point on it, DUH! Perhaps he'd rather those warring giant robots would be better portrayed by men in rubber suits, perhaps playing chess on a beach in arty black and white.

As for his film review advert where he's the popcorn guy telling the newsreader what to watch, if that was me, I'd punch the cunt and find another cinema.

This is a normal post Transformers was utterly awful
Objectively you can't see where robots begin and end when they fight. The plot and dialogue are like a seven year olds. The camera work is like a porn film (following peoples arses around in crowds, peering down tops etc.) it's bad. High School Musical is cheesy as fuck and aimed at young girls, but it's objectively a lot better than Transformers ....let alone the four sequels.

This is a normal post So you're saying 'corny film targetting young girls' = outstanding contribution to cinema.
'corny film targeting young boys' = apalling waste of time.

Yep, that's about the gist of his case too.

And just to clarify, you're saying one of those films should also be judged on its endless parade of tired sequels and the other shouldn't?

This is a normal post I got the impression that HSM is considered "Good, if you like that sort of thing."
whereas Transforms isn't good, even if you normally like that sort of thing.
(, Tue 18 Apr 2017, 14:31, , Reply)
This is a normal post I'm not sure how one self-identifies as 'normally liking that sort of thing'
When one doesn't like the 'thing' in question.

By what category do you classify a thing you don't like as thing you normally would like?

Personally I think the two films are roughly on a par, with obvious hooks for the target audience (in the case of Transformers, flash, bang, wallop, tits, and High School Musical has shallow social drama, perfect coreography, and unattainable late 20s boyfriends). Their success and sequels are almost perfectly matched. To laud one over the other is simply the bias of inauthentic liberalism.

This is a normal post You might be someone who normally likes
big budget action films with lots of special effects, or someone who just digs the work of Michael Bay generally, and then hate Transformers because the effects were uninterpretable garbage and because Bay massively over-indulged himself.

This is a normal post If you think his objection to Transformers was primarily about the special effects
you really weren't paying attention.

This is a normal post Nah Kermode is pretty decent at leveling out if a film will be any good or not IMO
All the films he has said go and watch, ive come out with a similar reflection, same too the ones he has said to avoid.

Critics of any industry will always be a bit poncy and up their own arse - they have to be so they claim authority over their decision making. Film 2017 is usually pretty good, but some of their special guests can often go very close to being obnoxious just to get some air time on TV.
