I had a Staffy that used to do exactly the same thing if you rubbed his fur the wrong way or kept your hand on his head for too long.
Used to scare the shite out of people who did'nt know he was a great big softy because his eyes used to glaze over until he looked like a rabid Gator.

My dad once gave the dog a large bone from the butchers (possibly a lamb leg) with all the marrow etc.
The dog went mental on the stuff. was really quite scary.

It's just a game - but like all games it can go too far. Best to keep your pinkies away from the back of the mouth - once those teeth scissor down the dog doesn't even know its really bit you until you're hopping around the house, nursing a bleeding hand.
