Am I the only one that thought Thunderbirds was massively overrated?

Considering it's age
Massively overrated isn't the term I'd use. 'Dated as hell' maybe, but it was made in the 60s.

When I was a young kid, many decades ago ...
... Thunderbirds was the highlight of the TV schedule. It looks all shades of shit now, but at the time it was as good as it got if you were five years old

Anyone remember a show called 'Tugs'?
That was my favourite. I watched it on YouTube recently, so incredibly well made. Got the impression the people behind it were absolute boating nerds. Stunning depth of field and attention to detail for a kids TV show.

I remember Tugs!
A particular episode with a ghost ship of some form scared the utter fuck out of me when I was about 4 or 5

Best SFX of any kids series at the time
And unbelievable music, always full orchestras.

I think it was good, but too formulaic (same goes for all Gerry Anderson puppet shows, tbh).
Anyone ever seen Space Patrol and Starfleet?

fucking loved it when i was little.
the special effects were pretty pioneering for their time. several of the people working on them went on to do big movie stuff...

Admittedly they did have a good influence on Trey Parker and Matt Stone

I think a lot of it involved growing up with it
As a kids show it was just superb.

Thunderbirds deserves a special praise
even with the massive special effects and music budget aside, it was (and still is) one of the few kids shows that doesn't talk down to children. Instead of a lot of the light hearted, cheapo shit you get these days, Thunderbirds gave kids a lengthy, serious narrative with big stakes, imaginative sci-fi tech and a surprising amount of emotional maturity. For that reason, I can still enjoy them, in spite of the relative tackiness.
