This is a link post One pound fish singer deported
I've not heard his missive but it was extensively discussed on the wireless. I gather it was quite the sensation

This is a normal post That's because it was probably written by a future cabinet minister.

This is a normal post given that he's a former member of Hizb ut-Tahrir...
i seriously doubt that. he's trying his hand at that poacher turned gamekeeper malarkey, more money in it, innit.

This is a normal post I think its a bit odd that this isn't mentioned in some of the mainstream media
BBC article (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20826525) mentions he "was visiting the UK for study and work, to try to make a better life for his wife and children back home", but that is not quite "he is due to be deported". My guess is mainstream media was aware of his deportation, but wouldn't really want to mention that in the same report as he is going for a Christmas number 1, it's not very inspiring for any aspiring musicians to think this non UK citizen can get all this promotion..... I'm not being racist BTW, just like to point out how crap media is.

Well, it was a bit vague- "the college closed": The way the government treats overseas students is shaming: they're a cash cow for universities, but the stringent hoops they have to jump through embarrasses everyone involved.
(, Wed 26 Dec 2012, 21:15, , Reply)
This is a normal post yes and no...
the fact that they are such a cash cow is precisely why so many bogus universities and colleges have been established. such bogus institutions have no real academic function or purpose, other than to take huge tuition fees in return for a student visa from people who would not be otherwise be granted visas, and they really don't care if they turn up for any tuition, if there is any adequate or significant tuition anyway, which often there isn't. if i remember rightly, that is exactly why his college closed, i.e. it was exposed as a sham.

This is a normal post That hasn't been true for a few years now.
What overseas students have to do to continually prove attendance at real universities is ridiculous & humiliating. London Metropolitan recently lost its licence for foreign students as it didn't keep tight enough reign on them. Though I haven't followed the story recently- they may have got it back...

This is a normal post Universities need 3 contact points with overseas students in a year.
ed: I say overseas, I mean non-eu. EU students can do as they like.

This is a normal post The university I work at requires students to present their IDs a lot more than that.
There is a genuine sense of fear that the uni will lose its licence. And the woman I work with who deals with the foreign students knows them all by name & yet needs to see passports & student ID regularly....

This is a normal post Actually it looks like the regs have changed since I last looked at them.
It's back to having cease sponsorship after 10 missed expected contacts, monitored twice a year.
ed: although in exceptional circumstances you can choose to not cease sponsorship, FFSUKBA.

This is a normal post I won't offer up a rant on this
but this has been a massive headache for HEIs. Especially when you get to PGRs who might not be in contact with a supervisor (at least in person) for quite a while.

This is a normal post ok but...
the only bit of what you say i really take issue with is 'a few years', they have started, in a typically lame, limp and slow and bureaucratic way, to crack down on it in the last 18 months or so. and yes they did relent with london met, to my mind incorrectly. the problem with the london met, and many other similar shitty institutions is that they grant the visa, get some fees, and the 'students' just disappear. they take on students who aren't up to studying at a tertiary level in a second language cynically for the cash, so obviously the drop out rate is fucking huge, even for those who genuinely come to study. that's the real shame.

This is a normal post I thought they'd really been tough with dodgy colleges.
But, knowing how this country operates, it wouldn't surprise me if that has been translated to "we will be tougher..."

The dodgy college/students disappearing used to be a massive problem- I thought it'd been stopped- I wouldn't be surprised if I were wrong.

This is a normal post All sponsors now need HTS and that means needing Educational Oversight.
Basically this costs so much that it bankrupted most of the dodgy places. We had ours done by QAA, fucking cowboys.

This is a normal post I work in a college that deals heavily with overseas students.
The Border Agency are cracking down on the regulations for overseas students, called Tier 4 students. Lots of smaller colleges are closing down, he would have a 60 day notice to find somewhere else to study before being deported.

What surprises me is that this guy was working, as if you're an overseas student at a private college you don't get a visa that allows working hours. Only Tier 4 students at Universities are allowed to work.

selling fish for a quid in a crappy market - not really a hotbed of visa checking. none of these 'students' were exactly on the books with their employers.

hate to tell you this, but no it's not.

lumping every online news/investigative journalism source in together because they share a delivery method is the same as lumping Private Eye in with the Daily Star because they both use paper.
