I don't know why but I find machines destroying themselves particularly pleasing, second only to the special effects out-takes of Red Dwarf.

Super hard to find somewhat pertinent reviews...
Most tool websites make the film reviews of « who must not be named » seem quite professional.

If you can swing the outrageous cost, anything by Festool seems to be just about bulletproof.

I almost had one of these fails moments ago. Turning something in a collet I had only hand tightened. Testament to how good collets hold.

An engineer took out the crankshaft of a small engine (1000hp class) for a tiny mod to save a few quids for the company.
Utmost care was taken to disassemble the heads and cylinder blocks.
It was then softly softly taken across the engine room to the workshop to the lathe.
Where it was placed and adjusted to a 1000th.
Same thing with the counter point and the tool.
Then everything was measured again 10 times with faffing on bomb fuse removal level.
Then the lathe was started for the one and only cut needed.
The thing wobbled like a demented brick fed washing machine smashing up the lathe and tool carrier.
Before freeing itself and careenering across the room twating everything in sight.
Nobody was injured but the most expensive part on an expensive engine was more fucked than Georgina Spelvin.
Ah yes, one must tighten the bloody jaws, someone must have thought.
Épilogue:
He was not even fired, a new engine was delivered, the lathe now does ovals and is still in use, all was well untill a main engine split in two some time later.

I've been remarkably lucky. I've got a Deckel mill, which is a brilliant universal machine. But it can munch itself if not careful.

I have to wonder if the last one left it going just to see what would happen.

...between the slow, confident, exacting precision beforehand, and the fast, chaotic, randomness of the aftermath.

Nice big machine but the operator was used to running an integrex E1060 with 300rpm max turning spindle speed. He forgot to set the speed limit on the spindle and as it made its way into the centre it got up to 1500rpm and ripped a 100kg job out chuck. it bounced about the inside of the machine for a good 5 mins before coming to a halt. It managed to take out the spindle and the cutting head.
