Tb2571989 says Bad Management isn't just a great name for a heavy metal band - what kind of rubbish work practices have you had to put up with?

My boss says to me "Are you off already? The others stay later, sometimes until 8pm.". "Do you pay them overtime?" I asked him, "No" he said. "Oh well, see you tomorrow then" I said cheerily as I left the building.

the boss has far more respect for you now than any of the dumb bastards working for free. Just dont ever expect him to say so. I will never understand people who do free overtime in non emergency jobs, do it tomorrow you stupid fucks and get paid for it too!

At a past job I arrived early and left late and worked through my lunch...did I get any thanks?
Never again. I lasted 5 months and almost had a nervous breakdown for my effort.

The contract said "9:00-5:30" and those are the hours I worked, no more, no less. OK, to be fair on the odd occasion I did stay late to finish something off and the boss would always wander into the office at about 7pm and offer to take us all down the pub. Quite a cool bloke/alcoholic.

I hate it when it is expected that you should do more than you are paid to do just because idiots are making that "normal" by their sucking up to the management by doing free overtime.
All it is doing is making working hours longer. No one's pay is going up except the management.
I assume it's the reason that 5.30, rather than 5 has become the standard time to finish work.

I work for a very large company which employs a significant number of senior managers who believe that you exist to pander to their every need at any time of the day or night, 100% of the time.
If something definitely needs doing before tomorrow, then I
will stay late to finish it, but you get no thanks for it - it's just expected of you - even if the urgency attached to the job is purely artificial or the result of someone else's fuck-up.
As a result, one of the guys in my team, who is somewhat outspoken, but very good at his job (he'll never be sacked, but he'll never get promotion either) has taken to responding to such urgent requests with the alleged David-Brentism: "A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine."
But then he backpedals and does it anyway.

told me that he was wandering through an HQ at 7ish one night when he spotted a light on. It turned out to be an office full of Warrant Officers playing solitaire. Not a single one was doing anything remotely useful but they were all terrified of being seen to go home "early"

And generally work 7-6 or so.
Works out fine though - the boss respects this and is always agreeable to the odd half day here and there...

turned out the Team Leader was coming in at weekends which I gathered when he moaned to me "I haven't had a day off for three weeks". "Hire a couple more developers" I thought to myself as I went home to have some dinner and relax for a few hours before bedtime.

Because one of my bosses is hot. I believe this is an acceptable excuse?

a manager who is now long retired used to go round the building at about 5.30pm switching off lights and telling people to go home. Before my time, but not by very much, I gather.
