This is a question Redundant technology

Music on vinyl records, mobile phones the size of house bricks and pornography printed on paper. What hideously out of date stuff do you still use?

Thanks to boozehound for the suggestion

Retro Gaming
Like I suspect many other b3tans - I have a nostalgic tingle for retro gaming. In the last year I bought an Amiga 1200 and a Megadrive, and my wife found her Master System. Bloody love them. Got emulators installed on every PC, plus on my DS with a NAWTY NAWTY R4 CARD.

It's weird being able to have almost the entire history of 8 and 16 bit console gaming on a device the size of a fingernail.

Saying that, nothing beats playing the games on the proper consoles with the proper controllers. It's also more exciting when you see the cartridges in the flesh!

(BTW, any other retro gaming geeks going to R3play in Blackpool this weekend?)

I'm with you...
I've only got my trusty A600 at the mo but I'm in the market for a Megadrive and a SNES.

I'm off to Blackpool on Saturday as well for an afternoon of retro gaming and boozing and dagnammit, I'm really looking forward to it!

R3play
This weekend is it? Shame, I won't be making it. Say hello to the RG boys. My PSP drive is fucked (along with the batter and the nub) so thinking about hacking that for some emulation.. But generally prefer the original N64/Saturn/Snes period myself.

I'm thinking of getting a PSP
As I can't actually get any SNES emulation working on my DS, and the megadrive/genesis one I have managed to get working doesn't fit all the display on screen at once.

All this stuff about custom firmware scares the piss out of me though. As shameful as it sounds coming from a geek like me, I've only ever played on a PSP once in my life, so I know pretty much bugger all about them.

I was doing a bit of "When I was Your Age..." with my son
and mentioned that in the olden days, our computers were all small, slow, had black-and-white text, no graphics, and you had to load the programs from tape. His response?

"What's tape?"

Heh
Yeah, I've heard that quite a lot, as my son is 10 years old. Reminds me of this BBC article from last year: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8117619.stm

Just finished
replaying Chrono Trigger (US version crammed into a converter) on the SNES, what a classic. Don't make 'em like that anymore etc.

EDIT: Also looks ridiculous on a 50" plasma. Be prepared to scale down the 'Sharpness'

DS is now on charge!
How have I never heard about R3play before, I live in Preston for Gods sake!
If I can rope a mate into it I may just go have a look see, or if not might dig my cagoule and weak lemon drink out; and go solo!

I think there's plenty of people going there on their own
Never been to one of these events before, but I'm assured they're all a friendly bunch. Don't think you can buy tickets on the door for Saturday, but you can for Sunday.
