Pronouns.
I get rather more upset than I ought by the misuse of pronouns. "Myself" is not the correct or formal form of "me", and I reserve the right to ignore all correspondence the writer of which asks me to give some information to himself on the basis that, if the writer can't construct a sentence, he's clearly too much of a cretin to be trusted with the information in question.

Nor is "whom" the formal form of "who". Honest. It isn't.

Something similar goes for the misuse of "... and I", as in "My mum invited Bob and I to spend Christmas with them". No, no, no, no.

Is it Bob and me then?

(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 13:53, closed)
Yes.
"Me", if it's the object. "I" if it's the subject.
(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 13:53, closed)
You've lost me know

(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 13:56, closed)

You've lost I now
(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 13:59, closed)
I particularly like this.

(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 14:01, closed)

Me particularly... ah, fuck it.
However, living in Somerset, "You've lost I now" is not actually all that uncommon.
(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 14:08, closed)
Yep.
You wouldn't say "Mum invited I to spend Christmas with them", and it doesn't matter how many others she invited.
(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 13:56, closed)
Okay, so if I was going somewhere
then it would be Bob and I are going somewhere?
(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 13:57, closed)
Yes
because you're the people doing the action, i.e. the subject of the sentence. If you're having something done to you, e.g. being invited to somewhere, then you would be the object of the sentence.

The full explanation is more complicated than that, but that's the general rule.
(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 13:59, closed)
^This^
Except that a full explanation wouldn't really be complicated. You've just about given it here.
(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 14:06, closed)
I am glad you raised it....
I alluded to it in my earlier post and I am glad I am not alone, well, not while it is you and I in agreement. Dammit.

Oh, and kudos to althegeordie who at least had the dignity to ask when not sure unlike every single presenter/newsreader/contestant on the light box. Clicks and stuff all round.

Wow,
people aren't normally nice about me on QOTW anymore.
(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 14:01, closed)
Awwwwww
Do you spend much time on QotW these days? I thought you were fairly nailed to OT...
(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 14:07, closed)
I comment occasionally
but last time I posted a story I got loads of personal abuse. Then one person said I probably wasn't as big a twat as I appeared to be and that he would buy me a beer. I think he may have been coming on to me.
(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 14:12, closed)
Rest assured
I am not coming on to you...let's go for a drink first and then if you are nice I may come on to you. I doubt the wife will approve though.
(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 16:25, closed)
that's because you are a terrible penis

(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 14:07, closed)
I and I don't misuse "...and I"

(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 14:44, closed)
You beat me to it
To make things worse, as I was reading that, I received an email with the opening sentence "I’m not sure if it yourself who I need to speak with."
(, Thu 8 Apr 2010, 16:29, closed)
The git I sit across a desk from at work
...uses reflexive pronouns like this all the fucking time.

Along with dramatically overusing "actual" and "actually". So he ends up coming out with stuff like "If you could actually send ourselves a copy of the actual physical actual item, we would them be able to actually quote an actual price to yourselves, at the end of the day."

There must be some sort of low rent business school that teaches idiots that this is formal business English because pretty much every shop floor Nigel that's been shifted to a job dealing with suppliers or customers seems to suddenly adopt this peculiar way of speaking.
(, Fri 9 Apr 2010, 13:32, closed)
it really is very very easy to work out
Just take away the other person, and see it the sentence still sounds right.

Dave and I went to the shop - I went to the shop
Dave and me went to the shop - Me went to the shop.

Some chavs shouted abuse at Dave and I - Some chavs shouted abuse at I

It really is that bloody simple. No excuse.

Take away the other person?
But then you'd be talking to yourself.
