This is a question Cheap Tat

OneEyedMonster remindes us about the crap you can buy in pound shops: "Batteries that lasted about an hour and then died. A screwdriver with a loose handle so I couldn't turn the damn screw, and a tape measure which wasn't at all accurate."

Similarly, my neighbour bought a lawnmower from Argos that was so cheap the wheels didn't go round, it sort of skidded over the grass whilst gently back-combing it.

What's the cheapest, most useless crap you've bought?

Nope, Dell aren't that bad
...provided you understand what you're buying, and where the corners have been cut.

Time, on the other hand..

Dell
Never had any trouble, mind you it's not my number one machine, but it was cheap.

Sorry, have to join in.
my Dell is great, and has not caused me a single problem in the years I have owned it.
Apart from when I stuck a head phone jack into the usb port and I thought I'd killed it...

Sorry, all...
but my girlfriend's Dell desktop is a true piece of shite.

My son works at Best Buy, and the Geek Squad guys tell him that Dells should come with a pre-paid pre-addressed box to ship them back in.

My laptop is an HP and my kids have Compaqs. I for one will not be going to Dell...

One of my home PCs is a Dell...

and it is affectionately known as 'Trigger's Broom' because I've had it for years and replaced every single part at least 3 times except for the mobo and case (obv). It has taken a kicking over the years and keeps on ticking.

So Dell are alright in my book...except for the shite 'internal bracket' idea that means you can't just plug any device straight in.

Another vote for Dell
I wouldn't buy a Dell desktop for myself (I'd either build my own or spec it from a specialist), but I have a laptop that cost bugger-all and (touch wood) hasn't had a problem. I've even bought them on behalf of friends (often enough that I ought to get a commission) and never heard a single complaint.

They're not the fastest or perhaps even the best-constructed, but in my experience they work and are hard to beat for the money.

dell aren't that bad.
They're laptops are ok (IBM are the best build quality wise).

The good thing about dell is they flog all their graded stock for fuck all, so you can pick up a good pc for practically nothing if you can handle having a quarter inch scratch on the case somewhere. I normally build my own, but seeing those prices I would reconsider. Full warranty too.

Fine laptops but......
I got mine this year with the finance option which meant documents to sign and send back, no probs I thought....... Not so.

1st email, a load of documents, please sign pages a,b and c and fax back to.... Quick check and I notice that my address is wrong. Not a problem, cross out the wrong number (for that was all that wrong) and fill in the right one. Okey dokey, jobs a good 'un.

Sent it off , get a phone call from Dell a couple of days later saying that they couldn't accept the faxes as they were a legal document and my alterations made them Null and Void. They will therefore sent the corrected versions for me to sign and could I fax them back. The email arrives Thursday, I print them off, sign them and send them on the first available opportunity, the next Monday, jobs a good 'un.

I noticed in my inbox after sending this that a reminder that "we have not recieved your documents" had arrived. "Not to worry" thinks I, "I have now", jobs hopefully a good 'un.

Another phone call from Dell acouple of days after that that they still haven't arrived. I confirm I have sent them, he asks me to repeat the number I used, which transpires to be wrong. Checking the email indicates that the number I have is correct. Ahh says Mr Dell, it's a different number in the reminder email............ Terrific thinks I, but never mind, I'll send it off again to that number, which I do the next day, and hopefully the job could finally be a good 'un.

A couple of days later another phone call saying that they still hadn't recieved anything. Marvellous thinks I, apparently between the call and sending the fax for the third time ANOTHER reminder email had been sent and ANOTHER phone number had been included. Excellent, thinks I. I get him to give me a final actual real fax number to send to, and whilst he is on the line my Mrs faxes all this stuff to them AGAIN. 20 minutes later he calls and has only recieved the top sheet. No fecking problem thinks I. I'll send the twatting things over AGAIN. 20 minutes later, he's only recieved the top sheet, ALTHOUGH Mrs tp confirms that the confirmation indicates everything has got there. Not to worry says Mr Dell, can you scan them all and send them as a TIFF file (big high res pictures if you must know). No probs. Scan, scan. Send, send. Sigh, sigh. Job must, at last, be a good 'un.

Next day, Mr Dell calls. The TIFF files were too big so could I scan them again and send them as Jpegs. Absolutely no.... bloody.... problem!!!! I reply. This is Dell. The worlds biggest computer company. The files.

Are.

Too.

Big.

For

His.

Computer.

It works a treat when it finally arrived, but ruddy nora and blimey o reilly. It's like they were trying to make sure I didn't get one.

It's only a young 'un...
But my mum got an absolutely smashing dell for the princely sum of £175 recently. 2.4ghz intel dual core, 2gigs of ram, 320gig hdd, XP Home. Brilliant value, best deal on a computer we've ever done.

Dell cut nonexistent corners
By, for example, rivetting peripherals into the case rather than using screws. Not a major problem, until your optical drive goes tits-up, and you end up having to drill it out.

Really, how much extra would the screws have cost?

(Their laptops seem ok, mind...)
