This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Common....
I like how 'common' is looked down apon by so many people here. To look down apon someone for the way they speak, I believe, is wrong. Aside the fact that different regions have accents, accents that people should be proud of... Language has evolved throughout the years, it always has and always will. We don't speak shakesperian-style anymore, for example.

Personally, I'm proud of being common.

I Love my accent
I don't regard myself as Geordie as I grew up in the Scottish/English border, lived in Norfolk and then moved to Germany for a bit. But I've lived in Geordieland for the best part of 20 years, and have picked up the accent a wee bit.

Regional accents ftw.

There's a big difference...
between being rhotic and non-rhotic, using long As and short As, having a burr or H-aspirating... and going round calling everybody a "faacking caant, innit!".

Accents doesn't = common
I have a broad Yorkshire accent and it is my pride and joy.
I also know plenty of people who could be considered as "wealthy" who are polite, well-mannered and considerate and speak more broadly than I do.
Accents are about identity, not social status!

So yep, regional accents FTW.
