This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Buliiiindah Datah is for common scum
Wasn't allowed to watch ITV because it was for common people.

And it wasn't like i was living in a 10 bedroom mansion with valets to wipe my pre adolescent bum clean of posh poo.

No, i was living in a nice, ordinary Bovis house in an estate. Admittedly all the streets were names after poets, so that's quite highbrow. Does you street name rub off on you? Don't think so. I don't think Marketing twats rate you according to the semantics of your address i.e. white collar but lives in 'High Street' therefore chav.

Anyway. I missed out on blind date, the A team, Airwolf, the Equalizer, Starsky and Hutch and that other one with a car and two men and a woman with breasts. It was shit. I lived on finger mouse, play school and that weird Box of Delights programme that i secretely loved (and still do - it gives me shivers)

So yeah - all of you who watched ITV as kids - you're all scum according to my mum. Weirdly my mate Nic at Uni wasn't allowed to either. Needless to say the glut of BBC programming enriched our blood with a bluer hue than you common bastards.

Me too!
ITV was pretty much frowned upon in my house when I was growing up. Children's shows at lunchtime were OK ('Let's Pretend', etc), but Saturdays were out of the question. Whenever I went round to my cousin's for tea on Saturday, it was like a holiday in a foreign land. I saw all these wonderous forbidden shows; Beadle's About, Cannon and Ball, The Price Is Right with Leslie Crowther and other until-then mythical light-entertainment gems.

Granted, Cannon and Ball were bloody awful, but then so was Ouzo and I wasn't allowed that either.

I was all your mates' mothers!!
Lots of my kids' friends and cousins were forbidden ITV, unsuitable videos, fish fingers, tinned spaghetti and fizzy pop. Some didn't even have TV at home and wore hand-knitted muesli to school.

My kids were allowed all the above pleasures and when their mates came round, they'd all have tea together on a coffee table in front of The Young Ones video'd off t'telly.

I must admit to taking a certain pleasure in this insidious child corruption.

Tea?
...on a coffee table? That's just not right, is it?

Absolutely.
Far too much of a rebel to set the tea table.

Starsky and Hutch
was always on the BBC actually, and if "that other one with a car and two men and a woman with breasts" is Dukes of Hazard, that was on the BBC too.

"In my day" ITV was not exactly banned, but very much discouraged and looked down upon (refered to as "dirty" - as a noun, not an adjective). In spite of rubbish such as on the buses, love thy neighbour, mind your language, ITV from the 70s looks positively classy compared to the dumbed-down shitfest which is ITV1 and 2 today.

was it????
well my bloody mum never let me watch it either. What was the other one? Dukes of Hazzard? Was that ITV?

My lot liked The A Team too.
How the flip are people supposed to understand Snickers ads if thet've never seen The A Team? Eh? Eh? Answer me that.

Blind Date
Once saw an episode where a stunning foxy French bird went away with a posh bloke. They didn't get on, he cited reasons like: "she knocked on my bedroom door in the middle of the night wearing only a skimpy nightie, I told her to go back to bed".

Call me common if you will but I would, err, not have done what he did.

Long lost relatives!!!
My mum called our street a cul-de-sac. And as far as I remember, we weren't allowed to watch ITV, apart from Tiswas on a Saturday. Because my Dad instisted.
We weren't allowed soap operas (You only ever got them on ITV in those days) because my Mum said that Coronation Street would rot our brains... My two brothers were astonished to watch Magpie round their mate's house, although that was more to do with Susan Stranks's braless exploits.
Eating in the front room was just never even discussed, never mind done, and I only ever let the kids eat in front of the TV when The Simpsons were on.
Bit of a shame that My Dad expressed a desire to watch Coronation Street, as this signalled to my Mum that he was DEFINATELY having an affair! (He was!)
