This is a question Controversial Beliefs

Some mugs still think the MMR injection gives children autism (it doesn't), while others are of the belief that we're ruled by billionaire lizard people. Tell us about views outside the mainstream which people go glassy eyed if you bang on about them (Your grandad's a racist - no need to tell us, thanks)

The Beatles are dull and overrated.
They're also not responsible for half as much as they're given credit for as their influence largely lead to tribute acts like Oasis and not much else.

Anybody that says that
Makes me pretty sure they've never listened to "Revolver", "The White Album" or the 2nd half of "Abbey Road".

My mate lives just off Abbey Road.
We went to visit her the other day, and enjoyed ruining several tourists' photographs.

It must be hell to drive around there without deliberately murdering someone.

I have, though I barely recall them.

Life's too short.
I have the soundtrack to Yellow Submarine, and thus have all the Beatles music that I'll ever need.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 14:28, closed)
I think they influenced Wings.

(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 13:48, closed)
"I got Paul McCartney out of Wings."
"You idiot! He was the most talented one!"

What do vegetarian worms eat?
Linda McCartney.

I don't agree with you,
but I will say I think most of the lyrics John Lennon wrote were pretentious tosh.

You spelt "all" wrong.

Overrated?
Isn't overrated just a wanky self important way of saying you don't like something. As if you have a special insite into the artistic merrit of the subject in question?
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 14:00, closed)
Goes without saying.

(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 14:04, closed)
Not really.
There are plenty of other bands I find dull. However, whenever somebody mentions The Beatles are dull the reply always seems to be along the lines of "But we wouldn't have modern music if it weren't for them!!!!" as if they're somehow holy and without reproach because they were one of the first to take advantage of Les Paul's multi-track recording techniques.
As a counter example, I find Oasis dull but I'd not call them overrated. I wouldn't call Abba overrated either despite not liking them.
Edit: This is nothing about "artistic merit" as The Beatles are/were real artists without question.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 14:05, closed)
the 'we wouldn't have modern music' quote is bollocks.
we would, obviously have music these days, therefore, by default, making it modern. It would just be that without The Beatles influence on so many artists, modern music would probably just sound different to what we have today, we wouldn't be able to compare this, in the way we can't compare our current modern music, to an alternative universes version of modern music. The music then and now is what it was/is. Who know's, if another band had been the big thing of the 60's, maybe we'd have different music now. If Blues music hadn't been as popular, then what followed wouldn't have been the same and so on all the way back. The fact you like or hate the beatles is irrelevant on the history of music or it's future. It's just an opinion. If the vast majority all of a sudden said 'actually, yeah, the beatles were rubbish' it wouldn't change what we have now.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 16:27, closed)
They only influenced a small section of music though.
If you look at, for example, metal music you'll see no Beatles there -- it's blues channelled through bands like Led Zeppelin who "stole" the sounds and made them theirs. We'd still have Heavy Rock too, not much changed if at all. Electronica would be unchanged.
My point is that their influence, whilst obviously there, was only of any importance in a small number of bands meaning that they're a lot less important than they're given credit for.
Perhaps I've just met too many Beatles fans who can't see past the end of their own nose and most people are more sensible?

"If you look at, for example, metal music you'll see no Beatles there"
You've presumably never heard "Helter Skelter" or read any interviews with Ozzy, Page, Gillan who'd all quote The Beatles as a massive influence.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 17:17, closed)
Take That could say they were influenced by Marilyn Manson.
Doesn't make him an actual influence on their music though.
It would be a bit tricky for led Zeppelin to be influenced by The Beatles when most of their catalogue are cover songs, for example.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 17:32, closed)
I'm not sure you understand what influence means

(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 17:39, closed)
Not to mention The Who.

(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 19:11, closed)
I disagree that electronica would be unchanged
The Chemical Brothers cite the Beatles as a major influence. 'Let Forever Be' is basically a cover version of 'Tomorrow Never Knows'.

Well just say 'I don't like them as much as most people do' then.

Overrated is implying that the majority of people hold an incorrect view, but you, and only you, have the finely balanced mind that is able to attribute the correct amount of 'ratedness' to them.

No artistic undertaking is 'overrated' it's just rated a different amount by different people.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 17:18, closed)
Overrated is what I mean.
People who don't actually care about music hold them up as the fathers of all modern music. People who care, and respond to threads like this, can discuss them objectively.
Nirvana, who I really liked, are overrated too. Far too many people think they invented grunge and all that comes with it.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 17:34, closed)
Ah. That's where we divert, pop music doesn't matter,

(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 21:22, closed)
you're overrated

(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 14:07, closed)
Oh no you d'hent!!!
Oh, you did... fair enough.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 14:11, closed)
Wouldn't really know, wasn't there
but given that a vast amount of respected musicians cite them as a key influence (in terms of songwriting, recording and performance), I reckon you might be wrong.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 17:19, closed)
YES.
