This is a question Dodgy work ethics

Chthonic asks: What's the naughtiest thing a boss has ever asked you to do? And did you do it? Or perhaps you are the boss and would like to confess.

Overheating server room.
Piss poor ventilation.
i.e. a small window that didn't open fully and a small vented fan in ceiling that seemed to just stir the wrm air round the oven of a room, rather than pull in cool air and vent hot air.
Air conditioning? No way, too expensive (ignoring cost of the servers and what it would cost to replace them)
Boss told me to put a vent on the (always shut) door to let some air in.
Said door was a fire door, which I pointed out to him.
Was told to do it anyway.
So I did.

There was also the issue of using a keygen to generate more licenses for the mail server as they were too stingy to actually PAY for more than 5 licenses.

Not sure which is 'naughtier'.

Did you die horribly in a fire?
If you died horribly in a fire then that was probably the naughtier of the two. Hope this helps.

to way check to see if you are on fire or have be burned horrbly by fire is
A) look for leaping flames and a smell of cooked chicken
B) look for large areas covered with cling film or dressings and also by looking in to the mirror to ascertain how much face you have left
note that if you are suffering a temporary case of permanent blindness you could try using your hands to feel if there is any damage if however you have stumps left then simply ask a person not revolted by melted faces for there opinion

*Not really it was fictional.

Had a similar thing at work...
We have a room about 3 metres square and chock full of heat generating technology. Repeated requests for air conditioning were ignored for years.

When it was pointed out by a visiting techy bod that the machinery may overheat and fail in the tropical conditions air con was installed within a week.

We had the same...
When a visiting engineer mentioned that lowering the temperature in our server room by 10 degrees might actually mean that
a) the servers would last until they were out of warranty
b) the UPSs would actually work if there was a power cut, of which there were many

7.5 KVa cooling later visiting the server room was no longer like going to the sauna and guessing which of the admin staff had changed the backup tape wasn't very hard.

if you are still there,
you can install an intumescent vent wich has expanding stuff that will seal the ven in a fire, doesn't work for smoke but is better then nowt.

I think the keygen is cooler
The room is hotter, obviously. Open the fucking door.

In the event of a fire I would definitely hide in a cupboard instead of getting the fuck outside.
