Pointless Experiments
Pavlov's Frog writes: I once spent 20 minutes with my eyes closed to see what it was like being blind. I smashed my knee on the kitchen cupboard, and decided I'd be better off deaf as you can still watch television.

Big Brother, I ain't watching you....
I know a lot of people like this, but I really cannot see the point of it anymore. What started as a vaguely interesting social experiment in seeing how a random bunch of strangers locked up with one another for a long period would react to one another; has now degenerated into an exercise in ego promotion, nastiness, bullying and the pursuit of fame, however fleeting, at all costs. Not to mention a competition between the female inhabitants as to who can get their norks out first in Zoo or Nuts. I’m glad to say that I haven’t seen any of this series, but have heard that the latest brainless oaf to be evicted didn’t know how many weeks in a year there are and had a predilection for getting her baps out at the slightest opportunity. I also believe that this person works with nursery children – God help them!
It seems that as each series has progressed, the nastiness between housemates has increased massively. Despite the time it is shown, a hell of a lot of young children seem to watch it as well, which really saddens me.
I hope the fact that the series is already being scrapped in Australia is sign of things to come in the UK… Three series were enough. The rot seemed to set in a few years ago after the housemates were labelled as ‘boring’ – it seemed that Channel Four were going out of their way to get the most extreme characters possible to provoke confrontation. It’s run its course, let it die an undignified death. And take Davina and that God-awful faux-Geordie Marcus Bentley with it.
Please?

The first series was ace..
..when they just sat around with F all to do and didn't really know what to expect. The guitar-playing lesbian who won it was a genuinely nice person. Now the people are horrible and made more horrible by downright nasty tasks intended to promote segregation and schadenfreud-induced laughs. And half the bloody country watches it, with every plebian fan seeming to find some ironic virtue in being so lowbrow -"Oh hahaha, I know it's wrong but I'm addicted, hahaha". "Piss off you brainless cuntstain, it's just wrong and that's that!" says I.

The first series
was won by Craig the "builder" from liverpool, in truth he ran a large firm of building contractors, he probably didn't know what a hammer looked like since he obviously spent all day in the gym. Cunt.

Yes
It is, and probably always was, a largely pointless experiment.

I have always hated
it with a vengeance. It has spawned some of the most pointless 'celebrities' of all time, Jade Goody and Brian Dowling for starters.

It should have been Anna...
I was hooked on the first series - and it's been going downhill ever since.
Craig won because he fronted up to "Nasty Nick": what most of the viewing public didn't realise was that Craig was always in on what Nick was doing, and that he only confronted him when he realised that Nick was essentially stabbing him in the back.
Still, Craig did give his winnings to a local girl to get the medical treatment she needed, so he wasn't all bad.

Correct
I'd have to agree with you completely. It's about selecting a bunch of people all of whom are slightly odd and willing to play up to the cameras as much as possible... and putting them through a series of humiliating and shitty situations just to watch them play up and behave badly. So we can laugh.
Ha. Ha. So very funny.

I'm with you on this
I watched the first four series end enjoyed them. I'd watch the first show, then only watch regularly six or seven weeks before the end, therefore making sure all the feckless idiots had been kicked out and you were left, mostly, with genuine, interesting people. The group dynamic was, to me, much more interesting with a smaller group.
Now, to keep the sensationalist public happy, the producers seem to choose the most base, bottom-feeding housemates to ensure snogging, alcohol-fuelled arguments and counter-intelligent sound bites.
No offense meant to anyone here who watches it (my dad, 51, loves it) but it is now a show for the lowest common denominator and is the adult equivalent of the Teletubbies, Which I quite liked, ironically.

Totally agree.
I liked the first series despite being SURE I'd hate it, and was vaguely interested in the last few weeks of series 2-4, despite a general dislike of where it was obviously headed. I've completely avoided the last 3 series'. It's depressing how low society has sunk that it remains largely popular.
While I'm having a moan, Kerry Katona and Jordan can piss off an' all :P

How the hell did Jade Goody get so famous, when Kate won it that year and was much much hotter.

Jade got famous..
..for being incredibly ignorant yet not in the least bit ashamed of it. That and flashing her norks. Perhaps says something about the viewers?

To begin with, I'm Aussie
I was very excited about the start of the first series, having heard about your lock 'em in a house for 3 months with nothing to do version, but ours is crap.
They give them weekly tasks to keep them occupied and 24 hour access to a psychiartist in case they feel ...well anything.
But the best quote from ours (after you mentioning the contestant that didn't know how many weeks in a year) was to some bimbo a couple of years ago
"You're niave."
"What does that mean?"
Rereading this though, it came off funnier on the tv.

Kate does a lot of DJing now
and is on Kerrang and a lot less annoying now she has her own show that when she was on with that twat in the morning.
But yeah loved the first series, watched bits of the second one but then haven't watched any since.
