To be serious, I don't think it is really spite...
But yeah, if there is an opportunity to insult someone for the hell of it, it will be taken. There is usually no malice in it as far as I can see, but people will be as cutting as they can manage, so they may well cut pretty close to the bone.

You then have 3 choices:
1) ignore it or laugh it off
2) leave b3ta, because you don't like that sort of thing
3) start a flame war

1 & 2 are what most people do, and both are acceptable... A rare few opt for 3 and it's always hilarious; now, you seem to be on the verge of 3, with stated intention of 2. Can I recommend 1 instead? It really is the best option.
