This is a question Irrational people

Freddie Woo tells us "I'm having to drive 500 miles to pick up my son from the ex's house because she won't let him take the train in case he gets off at the wrong station. He's 19 years old and has A-Levels and everything." - Tell us about illogical and irrational people who get on your nerves.

Our family knew a man who was a research chemist and he was horrified with modern medicine
and so became a naturopath and a purveyor of all manner of snake oils and sugar pills. He truly believed.

How sad then that first his daughter died of MS. Then he died of liver cancer and the funeral of his wife takes place on Monday having died of a very nasty throat cancer. Did they do all the chemo and radiotherapy, yes they did. Did the daughter use all that modern science had to offer, of course.

Did they also live the organic food life to battle their ills, of course. Did they self medicate, of course. They threw everything at their ills.

The muttered conclusions of the well meaning. Well, modern medicine just does not work. That chemo, pure poison. etc., etc., etc., etc.

So you're saying that once again natural selection rids us of a family of fucking idiots?

(, Fri 11 Oct 2013, 10:14, closed)
I don't think this is how natural selection works.

'You know what they call alternative medicine when it works? - Medicine'!
All of the naturo/homeo/whatevero paths will always cling to their beliefs. They're mental, but committed (not in the incarceration sense - which they all should be).
As to 'That chemo, pure poison' etc... They're actually right, some are based on nerve gases (Musteine, Lomusteine etc) doesn't mean they don't work! If a homeopath spouts this to you, punch that cunt in the head - they prescribe Arsenic FFS! Admittedly in a nil dose, but the water remembers it's had Arsenic in it and the power of the ingredient is magnified by dilution.
No, sorry, the other thing.
Homeopathy is bollocks.

The power of the placebo is well documented
and has some place in medicine
(, Fri 11 Oct 2013, 11:55, closed)
But no place in music.

Sugar pills are cheaper than antibiotics, and a good way to appease the worried well.

There was a study that showed the placebo effect was still measurable even when people where told they were taking placebos
I think what they were measuring there was percentage of the population too fucking dumb to know what placebo means.

Yes, chemo is a poison. But, regarding your well stolen Minchin line regarding alternative
medicine, then the poison is a medicine because it works quite well on cancer, ergo when people keep saying it is a poison detracts from its notable effect and allows misguided twats to then assert that household bleach can cure many ailments when ingested.

Medical society in less than thirty years will look back on chemo for curing cancer as being as barbaric as trepanning to rid people of demons.

just about everything sold as medicine is poisonous if you take enough of it
but if it's made it on to the market, a lot of work will have been done to ensure there's a very wide margin of error between an effective dose and a lethal one

Touching faith in "the market" there
It didn't work with paracetamol, after all.

25 percent.
Apparently the amount of hospital admissions caused by side effects of prescription drugs. The market couldn't give a shit.
