This is a question Modern Life

Modern life is Rubbish, suggested Damian Allbran of Pulp
He might have had a point. What was better about the good old days, or conversely do you believe the modern world to be the zenith of civilisation?

Dinner pre mobile phones
When folks sat round the table and talked to each other, there were no mobile phones next to their plates to be twiddled with between mouthfuls.
No text message beeps that had to looked at or answered.
I have to say it really annoys me when I'm out with friends for a meal or just for drinks and the flipping phones take precedence

I just make a game of this. Everyone put your phone in the center of the table. The first person to pick up their phone before the check arrives pays the check. The others split the tip. If nobody picks up, then we split as we normally would before phones.

I've never gotten a free meal, but I've had plenty of pleasant dinners with friends. They just turn their phone off and we wallow in conversation.

I think munch is onto something,
as I have never been out to dinner and everyone was on their phone. I knew one bloke who used to do it, so I stopped associating with him.

etiquette evolves, it's not like we piss into commodes whilst still in the dining room with our guests.

Nobody uses flipping phones anymore.
It's all about phablets these days.

Was in a pub in Yorkshire where it's the law not to use your mobile phone.
There were old phones with arrows through them dotted about the place as warnings. The pub was packed.

Grinton if you must know.

I hear you mate.
A boorish yank at another table ruined an otherwise lovely evening by incessantly trilling away on a Motorola Startac.

You are not alone. Although it's not just phones I hate. It's humanity.
