There's plenty of point in being funnier than them
it's hard to be intentionally funny when you're on a moral high horse filled with indignant rage though.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:06, 2 replies, latest was 14 years ago)
Very true.

Master that....

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you ... Jon Stewart.

See the things he gets angry about actually matter
not someone being a bit sarcastic at someone else on the internet.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:12, Reply)
but but but but...
but it matters to *Meeee*

I hate it when people are needlessly cuntish. :o(

It give me an unhappies.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:13, Reply)
Then, most seriously, you are wasting your time here.
/OT is not in any way representative of b3ta in general, or more specifically, how b3ta was several years ago. You need to stop, take several deep breaths and remember that none of this is bloody real.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:26, Reply)
sssssssh
it's threads like this one where people get amusing.

if you piss on it, we'll end up with more reams of what's for lunch (nothing for me as have fancy client dinner tonight) and what people are doing at the weekend (urgh what am i not doing this weekend, my life is ridiculous at the moment).
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:29, Reply)
I bet you're not wrestling a bear covered in vaseline
this weekend.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:31, Reply)
hey
if that's your nickname for "sex", you carry on using it, ok?
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:34, Reply)
haha ... errr... yeah.
I was merely trying to find something you weren't doing this weekend in response to your post. My own bear-wrestling is another thing altogether.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:43, Reply)
seriously
it's ok. nobody is judging you.

well, except all of us.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:52, Reply)
Whilst I agree, in principle, with your point - taking anything on B3ta too seriously is a Bad Idea, as I've had pointed out to me in the past -
this is nonetheless a public forum and everyone who contributes to it is entitled to an opinion as to what constitutes acceptable behaviour. I don't personally understand why people treat any corner of the internet as a place to abuse and offend people, and nor do I understand why such behaviour can be passed off as "just silly internet banter" by others. Whilst I accept that the majority rule is "meh, I can't be arsed with people like him, not worth getting worked up about, is it", Humpty or anyone else is entitled to express a contrary opinion.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:33, Reply)
because the world is full of weirdos
and the virginal dullards who would previously have spent their lives as silent pen pushers and data administrators can now spunk all over the internet.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:40, Reply)
Obviously, this too
but you'd be foolish to assume just because people are cunts on the internet they are automatically dullards or idiots. And you'd be especially foolish to think you'll come close to winning a pissing contest.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:46, Reply)
it's like anything else
some of them are cunts, some of them aren't.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:53, Reply)
I'm not saying Humpty hasn't got the right to his opinion
of course he does. But there's a difference between "expressing an opinion" and "complaining that your opinion isn't the way things are done"

firstly, it's pointless, because it won't work and you'll come out of it looking like a fool. It's like walking into a lion's enclosure and trying to persuade them to vegetarian. Secondly, the majority, including those who set up and run the website, don't want it to work, because bile is part of b3ta's ethos. And thirdly, why on earth waste your time getting upset about something that isn't real?

The fact that it's a public forum is irrelevant. No-one makes people post here. There is a corner of the internet for everyone. If people don't like the abuse here, you're in the wrong corner. Accept that rather than pointlessly try and change that corner to make it the fluffy place you want.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:41, Reply)
I see your point
and will happily accept that attempting to change the established order is a futile gesture. On the most basic level, it seems like a shame that someone can get stick for objecting to trolling. However you're absolutely bloody right about the ethos of the website, and must concede that your argument has greater validity and weight than mine. Well played, sir.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:44, Reply)
I will also caveat my point
by saying that there are limits, and unfortunately only an individual knows what the limits are. I've "done a humpty" a few times on /talk over the years but never to a troll, it's just provoking the response that the troll is after.

For instance, I come here much more than /talk now, not because I can't take the cuntiness, but because the discussions are better, IMO. And I thought you deserved a wanker like me.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:50, Reply)
Good job there isn't a "one in/one out" policy on wankers then, eh Chompy
Once again I appear to have allowed this subject matter to get my back up when I should know better
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:56, Reply)
I'm not saying you shouldn't object to trolls
I think I've not made myself clear. But actually complaining to the troll, in the thread they are trolling in, is pointless. And getting uspet about trolls is pointless.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 11:02, Reply)
Another good point
I've found that complaining about trolls to anyone is usually met by a barrage of "MTFU"s and arguments that I shouldn't take things so seriously. That's what annoys me.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 11:18, Reply)
"Do not feed the Troll"
Is an excellent mantra anywhere online, DF, not just here.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 11:20, Reply)
Hahaha
The funny thing is that I only started frequenting this site cos I liked the Image Challenges. I'm still not sure why I stuck around, or keep coming back. I seem irretrievably drawn to this place, like innocent passers-by caught in Beth Ditto's own personal gravitational pull
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 11:24, Reply)
There was only /board when I started here
but, as I said before, when /talk started it was very much like it is here now. Which is partly why I prefer it here.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 11:35, Reply)
I've never been on /Talk
I hear horror stories
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 11:38, Reply)
BEING SARCASTIC AT PEOPLE ON THE INTERNET IS EXACTLY HOW HITLER GOT STARTED
Joking aside, I'm with Humpty on this one. There are various people on QOTW who I'd happily kneecap if I ever I met them
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:18, Reply)
Yeah but no offense you're a fucking spastic.

Why the fuck do you get so upset with online twatting about?
It's not an online ballroom board.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:36, Reply)
Pet hate
Personal choice. Call it what you will. I just don't get the appeal of online abuse. Feel free to enlighten me.

I am intrigued by the idea of an online Ballroom forum. I imagine it would be inhabited by insufferably pretentious people. Let's find out.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:38, Reply)
I can't be arsed going into it, but see Badger above
Without the abuse this place would simply be monotony, shit people beaking about their shit hood butter lives, with food and weekends thrown in for good measure.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:45, Reply)
AKA Home Sweet Home threads.

The only thing that pissed me off about the HSH threads is that the people in them were fine abou it.
Then some people came along and said this is shit and moaned and moaned about it. If it was shit then why join the thread?

That's how the Nazi's got into power.

Not a bad point really
also points for the Hood-Butter reference
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:48, Reply)
Abuse is rarely funny.
Taking the piss is.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:49, Reply)
Mostly, though
the distinction between abuse and taking the piss depends on the recipient's sense of humour. This is an online site universally known for very borderline stuff. I'd argue 90% of the time if you're getting offended it's your sensitivity rather than the commenter's nastiness that is the problem. The other 10% is where the problem lies, but BranynDedd's trolling isn't anywhere near that.

Some of the abuse that was trolled at, say, Tourette's, in the past, is in the unacceptable 10% category and I happily said so, on talk, at the time. But there is an issue here - I'm not justifying cunty behaviour, but if you post on a public forum deeply personal information which would hurt you if used abusively, then while you don't deserve abuse you can hardly be surprised about it.

I think that it's a bit double-standard really. What Humpty is saying is a version of "you'd never say that kind of stuff to someone in a pub but it's somehow OK on the internet?" ... but the response is "you'd never stand up in a pub an announce you were abused as a child to strangers" either. You can't really have your own way on one and not the other.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:58, Reply)
You have a point.
But I do think that abuse is very different to piss taking and nothing to do with the recipient's sense of humour. It's to do with the abusers intention. Whether to poke fun, (even if close to the bone), or to make someone upset.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 11:04, Reply)
That, I concede, is true - although again that's just as much down to the recipient's interpretation
But that's part of the online world, and on a public site that will never go away. A lot less of the stuff on here is genuinely meant to upset than people think. At most all a troll is looking for is a rise, so why give them it?
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 11:19, Reply)
I agree.
Which is something I've learnt not to do. Rory has tried a couple of times to get a rise out of me and I think he's cottoning on now.

Your congenital incapability to go more than 5 minutes without being a dick never ceases to amaze me
No offence.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:35, Reply)
You're an easy target I can't resist it.
It's pretty much how you feel when a guy bends over in front of you.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:38, Reply)
Brilliant
Explain your motivation for calling me a fucking spastic in this context, if you would
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:39, Reply)
Because you were saying you care enough about what happens on here
to "happily kneecap" people you don't really know in real life.
That's ridiculous. There is absolutly no reason to wish anyone on b3ta harm for what they do on b3ta, just think through that chain of events. The way you seem to think that your position is somehow morally justified is also hilarious, YEAH STRING UP THE BULLIES. That's just wrong.

But about 60% of why I called you a fucking spastic is because I knew you would act like a fucking spastic as soon as I called you a fucking spastic, you fucking spastic.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:45, Reply)
I accepted some time ago that you and I are never going to get on
but surely someone as intelligent as you can see the inherent flaw in chastising me for taking B3ta too seriously and then assuming that when I say I'd "happily kneecap" someone I absolutely mean it. Do I strike you as someone who goes round starting fights? Look at my hair, for fuck's sakes.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:51, Reply)
The whole point was I was taking a post differently to how you meant it.
That's how half these arguments start, and it's inherent to nearly everything text based, especially something as quickly writen as this. That's why you shouldn't ever take anything seriously on here.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:54, Reply)
This is why we're never going to get on
You make an absolutely brilliant point here in response to a question which I posed which I now consider to have been satisfactorily answered. But you had to call me a fucking spastic several times first, presumably to fill some sort of quota
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 10:58, Reply)
It was only 5 times stop being so sensitive.

(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 11:04, Reply)
What's your cut-off for "several" then?
Your abject lack of any sense of grace is most unbecoming
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 11:18, Reply)
It's part of my charm
.
(, Thu 27 Jan 2011, 11:21, Reply)
Never heard it called that before
but then I can't imagine many people have used the word "charm" with reference to you, so I assume you think said word means something else.
