I got sent a video on how to cook steak
www.delish.com/recipes/cooking-recipes/taste-of-place/?v=43ea023a-ae38-3d88-5495-02da31316a5b&from=en-us_msnhp>1=47058

I have followed this and cooked some of the best steak I've had.

He's wrong
you should oil the meat, not the pan. Get the pan as hot as you possibly can, then once the meat is on, turn it down to about half.

But was it expensive enough to be considered "real" by food snobs?

I bought two sirloin steaks and four chorizo for £10.76
I bought the tomatoes, shallots and mushrooms to go with it for £1.75
