Having been made to suffer through a lot of tat on the free movie channels
I can tell you that are some horrendously bad old films. There are also some incredibly good modern films.

I don't think I've added any to my top ten list in the last ten years, though.

LIST!
1. Rear Window
2...

... Shaving Ryans Privates.

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:22, Reply)
Films I would happily watch again and again
Rear Window - obviously
High Society
Breakfast Club
Back to the Future - all three
French Kiss
Star Trek First Contact
Singing in the Rain
Anastasia

The Breakfast Club is a great film
I can't wait until I'm old enough to feel ways about stuff.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:30, Reply)
what?

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:31, Reply)
It's a Futurama reference don't worry
Fry Says it when he finds The Breakfast Club soundtrack in his record vault
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:34, Reply)
Sorry
I'm obviously not one of the cool kids.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:35, Reply)
Well you can write the letter then

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:41, Reply)
Now that one I got.

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:43, Reply)
I saw Simple Minds a few years back
and all I could think of was the Breakfast Club
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:49, Reply)
You didn't think about walking out in disgust?
Or brutally murdering any of them with a sledgehammer? This is worrying.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:54, Reply)
They were at a festival
And they opened with Don't you forget about me. So no I didn't murder any of them cos its a great song
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:56, Reply)
I can find no fault with this list
except French Kiss, which I haven't seen
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:30, Reply)
I'm a pathetic, hopeless romantic
and it's my favourite of Meg Ryan's films. And Kevin Kline makes a fantastic Frenchman. And it has Jean Reno in it.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:32, Reply)
When Harry Met Sally is the best Meg Ryan film
FACT!
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:33, Reply)
is there one where she is brutally murdered?
that would be the best one
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:37, Reply)
officelols

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:48, Reply)
You are wrong.
That film had carrie Fisher in it.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:37, Reply)
Carrie Fisher has been in some classic movies
Three, by my count
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:42, Reply)
Yes
but she wasn't old in those three.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:44, Reply)
How on earth do you know which films I mean?!

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:47, Reply)
Because I know you.
you geeky fool, you.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:53, Reply)
Ah, yes
That you do.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:59, Reply)
I heard an amusing anecdote about the making of French Kiss, which as a linguist I'm confident you will enjoy
Meg Ryan apparently asked Kevin Kline to improve her French pronounciation, and obviously being Kevin Kline he's good at everything. She asked him how to correctly pronounce the French for "thank you very much", and he told her to enunciate the "l" at the end of the sentence.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:37, Reply)
pfft
I can imagine she probably did it too.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:39, Reply)
I love that you get this

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:43, Reply)
We share one in common
Back to the Future
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:34, Reply)
I've never watched Breakfast Club.

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:47, Reply)
I usually don't like remakes
if an old film was good, there's no need to do it again.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:22, Reply)
^this, very much

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:23, Reply)
Some remakes are better
Most are shit
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:24, Reply)
Sometimes the original concept was good
but poorly executed, possibly due to budget constraints. So a remake can improve on it.

But not very often. In fact I'm struggling to think of a remake that I preferred to the original.

Actually, the new Dawn of the Dead film was a better horror film than the original, though it lost the social commentary.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:24, Reply)
I was about to say "was it fuck"
but it's not a bad point actually. Setting aside how much scarier the remake is, because 1970s Zombies are just nowhere near as frightening on account of very obviously being extras covered in ketchup, both are probably equally effective in terms of the impact on the audience they were aimed at.

Good example of a cracking remake, I still think the original is a better movie though
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:29, Reply)
I don't watch
horror films, so I can't agree nor disagree.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:38, Reply)
Battlestar Galactica remake was better
TV series I know but it still counts!
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:27, Reply)
You are Darth Foxtrot AICMFP

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:28, Reply)
You are absolutely, indisputably correct AICMFP

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:29, Reply)
I am always correct
I just finished Caprica. Its a shame that they rushed three seasons worth of plot in to the last 15 minutes. Otherwise I really enjoyed it.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:32, Reply)
That's sort of what they did with Jericho
a great series rushed at the end so we actually get to see how they wanted it to finish.

I am just at the beginning of season 3 of BSG, and am enjoying it very much indeed.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:34, Reply)
It's one of the best series i've watched
I think I liked it even more than The Wire
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:37, Reply)
The first time I went to Baltimore
we went on a sightseeing trip, and they showed us the precinct from that show. I've never seen it, though.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:40, Reply)
A lot of the extras were just people who lived in Baltimore that they liked the look of
Lisa Bullock for example. Oh and Felicia Pearson.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:43, Reply)
My friend's daughter was on set and has pictures with aome of the cast, I think.
I have to say, it's a beautiful town and I wouldn't mind living there.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:47, Reply)
ONLY SEEN HALF THE SERIES SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP
Brilliant so far I must say
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:37, Reply)

You bastard
I suppose that's saved me 9 hours though
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:42, Reply)
Wow, that Rentaghost reboot sounds great.

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 15:01, Reply)
I haven't seen the remake yet but I doubt it's got a better theme tune

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:59, Reply)
John Carpenter's The Thing
fucking fantastic film and is a remake
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:31, Reply)
Yes, that's a brilliant example.

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:35, Reply)
The Donald Sutherland Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers is fantastic
Very much of its time, much like the brilliant original. The Gabrielle Anwar one in the nineties and the recent one with Nicole Kidman were shit, however.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:37, Reply)
Not necessarily the case
Seven Samurai is an amazing film, but so is the Magnificent Seven. The former is better but the remake is also brilliant.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:40, Reply)
Maybe one day me and you could make a movie? I think it would be quite good.

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:29, Reply)
you are naughty.
Go to your room.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:30, Reply)
YES ! That's exactly how I want to start the movie.

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:31, Reply)
Poor Gonz
You're about forty years too young for me.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:36, Reply)
Surely 40 is old enough
apart from that?
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:37, Reply)
I must be really thick today
because I didn't understand that either.
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:41, Reply)
I was being nasty and rude
and implying that Gonz was 40. And that you still wanted 40 years added on
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:43, Reply)
Alas, if only I was 20 years younger and you were 20 years older.... couldda had something, kiddo.

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:40, Reply)
.... lol, yeah', a court case.

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:40, Reply)
It would be worse than Plan 9 From Outer Space.

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:31, Reply)
I'll see your Plan 9 From Outer Space
and raise you Moulin Rouge
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:38, Reply)
Never seen it.
Am I lucky or what!
(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:40, Reply)
Worse than Manos: The Hands of Fate?

(, Thu 9 Jun 2011, 14:46, Reply)
Is Manos Heurelho Gomes' nickname?
