There might possibly an "iPhone for the masses", a cheap model that would make it affordable in emerging markets, to compete with the low-end level of Android. Cut a loss on the hardware and make a fortune in iTunes/AppStore.
I can't see me updating to the iPhone 5 this year, the only new feature I'd like is the reportably bigger screen, but I have an iPad to cator for that, and if it means I can drop my contract/insurance from £70 down to £25, then I don't think there is anything worth upgrading for.

Not sure whether to just get a 4 cheaply or splash out on a 5

If you use up a big contract's worth of stuff, then I'd go for iPhone 5, but if you only have a big contract to make up the cost of the phone, then I'd go for the iPhone 4 (or whatever they make the 'iPhone Lite' to be).

Iphone can fuck off, I'm getting a Samsung Galaxy S II on the grounds that after reading dozens of different reviews and comparisons I've come away with the vague impression that it's probably pretty good.

A guy at work had one he was very pleased with, when he saw how well my Palm handled having half a dozen apps and webpages running simultaneously I thought he was going to cry. That sort of put me off.
