I'm going to buy a new hard drive in a couple of days time.
This post is at least as interesting as everyone else's

I was going to buy a new sound card tomorrow.

You computer chaps.
It's all fucking go.

I need one of those, too.
Only mine needs to have a coax connection on it, which limits me to the eighty pounds plus category.

My bottom hasn't declenched enough to allow me to spend the money yet.

I just need something that has proper drivers
as my onboard card doesn allow me reduce teh base, rendering my speakers pretty useless as the subwoofer makes it impossible to listen to films.

The annoying thing is, I don't need the card to do any actual processing
just to shunt it along to the amp. The way things are wired up though, I've run out of TOSLINK ports. You don't get sky boxes or ps3s with coaxial ports, so I need the soundcard to have one.

Bent.

Thats sad.
Maybe you could just get yourself a bit of bell wire, and solder an eigth jack from your headphone socket into the aux point of your amp?
(, Wed 28 Sep 2011, 17:07, Reply)
Yeah, I could
But the sound card's an old XFi one. It's out of support so I'll have to replace it eventually anyway

Fair enough
if you're gonna spend £80 on a sound card though, you might as well just buy a brand new computer.

Hah, believe me, I've done the maths.
I'll probably have to replace it all before too much longer, it's an old socket type etc. If I were to do that, I'd just replace the motherboard and CPU and make sure I got a mobo with a coax out on it.

That's partly what's been staying my hand.

I'm waiting for SSD to come waaaaay down in price before I consider investing.
Even though it would probably make like laptop run like the proverbial off a shovel.
(, Wed 28 Sep 2011, 16:56, Reply)
I need the drive for storage so SSD just doesn't cut it.
One day I might think about mounting an SSD for operational duties, but I can't really be arsed at the moment.

Yeah, I need to remember how to ghost the HDD over to it for that.
As ever, Google will be my friend, no doubt. Also, I need to figure out what kind of HDD the bloody thing has in the first place...

How old?

(, Wed 28 Sep 2011, 17:00, Reply)
Google "Speccy" and download the Piriform software you find.
Analyses your computer and tells you what you've got.

Or, just open the machine and read teh serial number.
(, Wed 28 Sep 2011, 17:03, Reply)
Works for me.

(, Wed 28 Sep 2011, 17:17, Reply)
Couple of years, at least.
At least I'll be able to tell if it's not ATA, anyways.
(, Wed 28 Sep 2011, 17:17, Reply)
As long as it's SATA, you're fine.
it's all backwards compatible.
(, Wed 28 Sep 2011, 17:20, Reply)
Ok fair enough.
I'll have to keep a closer eye on the boot routine...
