That's very true
and I have a litre bottle of the stuff.
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:24, 1 reply, 13 years ago)
What flavour?

(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:26, Reply)
Normal gin flavour
just Gordons. As a poor person I can afford no better
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:27, Reply)
I tried the Sainsburys own brand last night
It was OK and cheap.
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:28, Reply)
The only time I've had own brand gin
it tasted like turps. Naturally I still drank it
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:31, Reply)
I was pleasantly shocked by it being OK

(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:31, Reply)
I'll bear this in mind
I want to try making flavoured gin in the same vein as flavoured vodka
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:35, Reply)
This would be a good choice then
The flavour was quite mild. What would you do?
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:36, Reply)
Probably the same flavours as I did with vodka
lemon, mint and ginger (in separate bottles naturally)
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:37, Reply)
GINger!
Good idea! Lemon would be nice too. I always add loads of lemon juice in a G&T
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:38, Reply)
Since you're flavouring it any way
cheap gin is probably best. I imagine it'll make an excellent mixer with other alcohol
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:48, Reply)
I'm off to Tescos this week as I've got a load of money off vouchers
I shall be purchasing large amounts of red wine and gin for Christmas

I'm thinking a Tanquerry and a Gordons Sloe at the moment, and at least 6 bottles of Merlot

I shall also be stocking the beer fridge up ready
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:28, Reply)
Tanquerry is an excellent choice
Substitute teh Melot for Malbec though would you old chap? ta
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:29, Reply)
I may do 3 of each then
Not that you'd sully yourself by visiting the North
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:30, Reply)
For you dear boy I just might

(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:30, Reply)
Tanqueray is nice, good choice
Hendricks is better. I'm trying to remember the name of a bottle of gin that the woman in Oddbins had behind the counter. It was ace.
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:30, Reply)
Depends if they have special offers on I think
I have to spend £70 to get the discounts!
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:32, Reply)
Easily done
send a bottle to me
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:32, Reply)
Bombay Sapphire is also nice.

(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:33, Reply)
Yeah
I've got an excellent lighty-up thing for the bottom of BS gin. The bottle glows blue. I am aware this is sad but I like it
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:34, Reply)
I drank a half pint of that neat, once.
I found it to be overrated.
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:35, Reply)
Anything other than breathing must have felt overrated after that.

(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:35, Reply)
The vomit was spectacular.

(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:36, Reply)
I've told this story before
but when younger I woke up early in the morning after a heavy night's drinking and blearily reached for the pint of water on the beside table. Sadly for me it was neat gin
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:41, Reply)
Oof! FUCK!
A wake up call and a half
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:42, Reply)
OUCH

(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:43, Reply)
Yes
an excellent start to the morning. It's this incident that goes some way to convince me that it's not that I have a miraculous anti-hangover power, but that I am perpetually drunk
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:46, Reply)
I think it was Frank Skinner who got to the point of having to drink a litre of sherry before he could get out of bed in the morning.

(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:48, Reply)
Eugh. Sherry?
Nothing against in small quantities at appropriate times, but in the morning?
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:50, Reply)
as opposed to a pint of gin? ;)

(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:53, Reply)
That was when I was young and reckless ;)

(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:54, Reply)
It's nice to meet another neat gin enthusiast

(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:55, Reply)
Gin is best of all the drinks
and that's an expert opinion
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 16:01, Reply)
I don't drink it anymore.
It has a particular effect on an aspect of my personality that the various assembled boyfriends did not appreciate.
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 16:02, Reply)
It can have a depressive impact.
I have seen a grown man weep about very minor matters after a night on the gin.

I have the occasional one as an aperitif but that's it - partly as gin hangovers are amongst the worst.
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 16:05, Reply)
I fucking wish it had a depressing effect.
Much less embarrassing.
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 16:06, Reply)
For the price differentiation between Bombay and Gordons
I'd either get the Gordons or go one better
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:35, Reply)
I find it too much - they've gone for too many botanicals
Tanqueray, Plymouth or Blackwoods for a day-to-day gin. Caorunn, Tanqueray 10 or Sipsmith for the more serious drinks.

But then I'm apparently the only person in the world that doesn't like Hendricks, either. So I'm probably wrong. Except, of course, I'm me, so I'm not.

And, anyway, as I've said four hundred times before - it's less about the gin and more about the tonic. If you're going to use schweppes of any kind or (god forbid) slimline tonic you might just as well start with meths.
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:42, Reply)
I quite liked Sipsmiths
And I keep meaning to buy Fever Tree Ginger Ale so I can tuck into my bottle of Hendricks properly. No point using Canada Dry...
(, Mon 31 Oct 2011, 15:57, Reply)
Oddly
I like Schepppes slimline but only as a drink on its own I wouldnt ruin good booze with it.
