It's pretty much a coincedence that the Vatican is in Italy. Next most important places to the catholics are in France and Spain as it happens.

the fact that it's the seat of the Catholic church
isn't really much to do with the Italians, though. In the whole christianity/catholic split, for long periods Spain, France and even England were more "important" to the Catholic church. I thought it was the Vatican by default since England and France effectively overthrew Catholic rulers?

The Romans would have killed any Italian catholics on sight, though, which does kind of put a flaw in Gonz'z idea.

How would they have done that? Catholics didn't exist in the Empire before it became Christian.
The Catholic church split from the Orthodox church way after that.

So the Romans be burning and killing normal Christians and to be honest that was somewhat overstated. Romans were quite into religious tolerance.

Hmm, not really and they mostly made examples of folk.
The Romans had a simple solution to religion, worship who you like as long as you acknowledge our gods. So, they did get pissy at the Christians sometimes but mostly left them alone.
