So Argentina wants the Falklands "back".
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18453372

Agree? Disagree? Personally, I'm not that bothered, but the sabre wrattling occurs on a regular basis.
I've been to a nearby lump of rock, the Ascension Island, and they're crap. I'd imagine the Falklands are about as bad.
Alt, is it too early to enquire about lunch? I'm rather hungry here.

I'm with the government on this
As long as the people on those islands want to be part of the UK, it's the UK's duty to ensure that they remain so. I don't care how many third world daygo countries that pisses off. There's absolutely no danger they'll be invaded again.

I am the voice of Imperialism.

I'm going to get a bunch on brits and stick them on an uninhabited island that belongs to someone else
and say the same thing. I just want the oil!
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 10:21, Reply)
It doesn't "belong" to anyone else.
They have never belonged to Argentina. Their entire argument rests on the islands being closer to them than us and that they once belonged to Spain some three hundred years ago.

its only about half way there.

The islands are ours, and the inhabitants want to be. End of argument.

Mind you, if it wasn't for the First Sea Lord happening to be in Downing Street when it all kicked off we'd have given them up in '82.

"If we don't act, Prime Minister, we will be living in a country who's word counts for little in the world".

This is good knowledge sir

(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 10:39, Reply)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Downing St
was willing to talk about it in '82, right up until Argentina decided force was the way to go.

The US, apparently, didn't think we were militarily capable of mounting a response.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 10:39, Reply)
Vulcan 607 is a very good book if you like that kind of thing...
about how they used a 1950s plane on the longest bombing raid in history (at the time). Pretty amazing stuff.

Apparently cos we withdrew HMS Endurance Argentina thought we weren't serious about the Falklands any more, and the military government needed a success to divert attention from the shit going on in their own country.

Sound familiar?

Those who don't learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it, etc

(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 10:52, Reply)
Nobody could say the same thing now
1,700 man permanent garrison, an airfield with three fighters, three RN frigates/destroyers and a nuclear sub in the area. The Argentines, meanwhile, still have the same planes they had in '82.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 10:59, Reply)
The problem now is that if Argentina were somehow to take them back
we would not be able to retake them as we have no sodding aircraft carriers left - or planes to put on them.

'Experts' reckon the only possible way for the Argies to take the islands would be through a special forces attack on RAF Mount Pleasant.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:08, Reply)
Not quite true, HMS Illustrious is still commissioned.
Not that she carries a great deal of airpower now all the Harriers are gone.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:14, Reply)
That makes it a helicopter carrier rather than an aircraft carrier, but I accept your point
but an invasion without air cover would be a disaster.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:17, Reply)
I have no evidence for it
but I suspect the Harriers could be recommissioned if necessary. The point I was making is that we have a ship capable of operating as a strike carrier. But yeah, the lack of planes is something of a handicap.

(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:03, Reply)
Wouldn't surprise me....
One of the main reasons we won was our nuclear attack subs, which kept the enemy navy in harbour.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 10:59, Reply)
The subs in question weren't equipped with nuclear missiles though if my memory is correct
The 'nuclear' refers to nuclear-powered rather than nuclear weapons-carrying.

The Polaris boats would have been kept well away from the area, although they could have hit Argentina from pretty much anywhere on the planet.

I suspect the nuclear option was just a hypothetical exercise in case things went tits-up. I'd be amazed if the mad old bag would have seriously considered it.

You imbecile, their navy didn't want to end up like the Belgrano

(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 12:02, Reply)
you are correct....
the subs were nuclear powered but armed only with normal torpedoes.

Apparently the Argentines were more worried about a conventional bombing of their capital by Vulcans than any nuclear option.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:22, Reply)
it's a British occupation of foreign land in pursuit of imperialism and oil wealth.
They should be handed back. Of course the inhabitants don't want that, but if they love Britain so much why don't they go live there?

As a wise man once said, there can never really be justice for stolen land.

(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:04, Reply)
The Spanish had it in 1760 something.
By the time we settled them in 1833, they had been empty for years. The Argentinians have never had people living there. When we settled them, Argentina wasn't even a country yet.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:05, Reply)
Yeah, something like that.

(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:06, Reply)
No, nothing like that.
It's British OCCUPATION of FOREIGN soil.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:07, Reply)
Here's the ownership in history.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Falklands.permanence.png

Spain gave all its south american colonies to the newly formed Argentina, so the spanish occupation is part of the argentine claim.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:11, Reply)
If you look at that graph
it shows that there's a period of non-ownership between Argentina and the UK's possession. Although it's true that I was incorrect in stating Argentina wasn't a country at the time.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:16, Reply)
Yeah, no one owned it for a while then there was an Argentine group on there
for less than a year and a british warship turned up and told them to fuck off.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:19, Reply)
Sounds reasonable to me
Fucking whining Argies.
(, Fri 15 Jun 2012, 11:23, Reply)
To be honest, we both have valid claims
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falkland_Islands_sovereignty_dispute
Thats why neither country will ever take it to court or to a UN judgment, because neither the Argies or us are sure who will win.
