I've just found out we're moving offices soon to Elephant and Castle.... anyone know what it's like around there?
I thought it was a hellhole, but Ma' says its great and they've done it up nicely. And being near Borough Market would be ace. Getting there isn't too bad, apparently according to google, but I reserve judgement on that until I've done the journey myself.
Tell me about where you work, does the area really matter that much?
Alt: My Nexus (tablet computer) arrived today. it's my first 'android' device, do you know any good apps'n'stuff for it? I'm not over-whelmed with it, but I think it would be fucking wicked on the move.

You'll be near Borough Market, with the tantalysing over priced food.
I work in Slough. It is a shit hole, but my office is nice and new.

It's changing a lot round there.
It used to be fucking appalling but there's a lot going on these days. HimJim poster (late of this parish) lives there and my pal Yeti used to have a flat there too. It's alright.

It is dull as piss but other than sources of lunch and a bank what else would I need during my working day?

I work on the roundabout where central oxford and east oxford meet.
It's a great place, 5 mins from the bustle if town, with all the decent independent and charity shops in the opposite direction about the same distance. I miss living down here, but its so chock full of student housing your almost guaranteed at least one set of cunt neighbours.

I like my job and where I work
but it's not in a great area, lots of unemployment and various social problems.
Mind you, I did once have a job working with the public in one of the rougher areas round here, that was interesting - including the kid (literally a kid, about 8 or 9) who didn't realise that stealing badges off the front of cars was actually 'stealing' because everyone did it. Before I worked there I thought it would be scary, but in reality it was just quite sad, although to be fair the sense of community was very strong

Elephant and Castle is a shit hole, especially the shopping centre bit which smells of underlying violence.

It's OK. The area you work in doesn't matter that much, unless it's in London which is entirely shit.

I work at a factory in Dudley Hill, at the south end of Bradford.
In the surrounding streets it's not unusual for houses to go on sale for £50,000 or less - usually by auction due to reposession. Also it's sandwiched between two large estates, one of which most taxi drivers won't go into after dark.
As for how it affects work, it's not usually an issue as the the site is completely enclosed and there's security on the gate 24/7. That said, pikeys have been known to get in at night and try to nick machine tools for scrap.

I've done photoshoots in a space in Clapton
surrounded on all sides by the very worst of the bad part of Hackney - proper, proper ghetto, and this place is like Fort Knox and costs a grand a day to use. Incongruity at its most glaring.

Y'right Woodside
I was asked to go to a job in East Bierley a few months ago - empty and not boarded, my instructions said.
As soon as I got there I knew it had been "Bierleyed" - original doors ripped off, new doors and what I euphamistically call "signs of occupancy" - a pile of shite in the front garden.
Leave a gaff empty in East Bierley and within a week it's got about 20 Eastern Europeans in it. There are places up there that'd be worth £200k in North Leeds and - as you say - the owners are walking away to let them be repossessed.
I won't work there any more and the only agents that will market there any more have a Z in their name....
