Rental property is cheap.
I don't know about areas outside the city centre, but near my building (which is about 5 minutes from the station), a one bed flat in a new building is about £400 a month.

Transport links are excellent too. It's the largest legal and financial centre outside London, it needs to have good transport links.

Christ, that is cheap.
How do the owners of these places make any money?

The cost of living is reasonable in the north, so it's all relative.

(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:33, Reply)
The purchase price wouldn't be that much cheaper than the south surely.

My mate's been looking at a move to :Leeds, he's a freelance graphic designer.
His mortgage is almost paid off, and if he sold his 1.5 bedroom house in York he could byu a 2 bed semi in a nice part of Leeds.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:35, Reply)
So Leeds is half a bedroom more shit than York.
Understood.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:39, Reply)
got it in one yer

(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:40, Reply)
The half-bedroom logic doesn't really work though.
There are some proper dives in the capital, and they probably want silly money.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:51, Reply)
You'd be surprised.
Our flat (2 bedroomed, good room sizes) would probably cost double in the south to what it would cost here. Probably more so depending on the area.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:35, Reply)
I'm surprised.
It isn't the 1970s anymore, I thought money and jobs (outside London) were more equal.

Maybe 'the North' is the next big thing.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:38, Reply)
Leeds and York have great property markets.
York's really expensive though.

The north east is the only region in England
where exporting goods has increased rather than dipped, fact-fans.

Most of that is down to Nissan, mind, but it's nice to see us bucking the national trend.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:40, Reply)
Woo! Go the North East.
Amazing what can be achieved when people aren't focused 100% on ship building!
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:49, Reply)
This is true.
Round my way it's not uncommon for flats and small houses to go for well under £100,000.

Where I used to work in Bradford they could go for as little as £50,000. That said, it was right by the ring road and sandwiched in between two rough estates.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:49, Reply)
When I was a lad, we lived on a rough estate.
There were fights and stabbings all the time.

The only sensible way of getting home was via the supermarket......

Well, it was a Safeway.

Fuck's sake Jeff.

(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:52, Reply)
You'd miss this.

(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:55, Reply)
There are some properties where I live
that are up for sale for around £25k. They are in proper RAF places though.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 20:57, Reply)
FFS, even Chompy could get a mortgage for that.

(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 21:01, Reply)
Yeah, but he wouldn't want to live there...
The first place I bought back in 1991 cost me £27k; same flat would now be worth about £120k. And it was in a really nice town.
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 21:03, Reply)
Blimey! Aircraft hangers for 25k.
Maybe I could set up a go-karting business!
(, Thu 25 Apr 2013, 21:03, Reply)
To be fair this was a 1 bedroomed shoebox in a grotty area.
Also: Rough As Fuck.
