'Touche'
Southend airport bar is spectacularly awful. Actually remarkably bad. It's like a travelodge conference room, no pints, no glasses...and no change or card payments.

I tell you what, this illegal downloading isn't as convenient as the kids would have you believe.
50+ minutes to download the thing, then a search* to find a program that can open it.
Got it now though.
*Not by me, the computer offered to do this for me.

So you're downloading pirated material onto a work machine?

I figured if there was anything wrong with it, the security measures they have in place would prevent me from doing so.

Nah it'll be fine.
It's kind of a don't ask don't tell deal. If they find it by accident they'll just tap their nose at you and turn a blind eye. It's only if you go around shouting about it that they're forced to make an example.

Downloading torrenting software onto corporate machines
is actually implicitly encouraged.

small businesses don't have the time or inclination to give a shit.
I can guarantee this from personal experience

Unlicenced and pirated software is absolutely fine.
I don't know why you think I'm suggesting otherwise.
(
Kroney, Mon 17 Jun 2013, 12:28,

I don't think I have downloaded any software.
Edit: I mean apart from the thing that Windows said would help me.
And Bill Gates said that, so it must be fine.

If you got it off a torrent site
you'll have needed a client to download it the torrent. If your company has any kind of security at all, then it'll be setting alarms off.
If not, then your IT department's not worthy of the name.

We don't have an IT department.
We have to adhere to strict hygiene guidelines here.

The primary reason why our knickers get in a twist, by the way
is that these things often carry malicious software that can fly around an internal network like wildfire.

On a serious note
if there isn't actually a decent bit of DRM to stop you installing multiple copies of a program on different computers, is there realistically anything a large corporation can do to find out if you are using it's software in accordance with the licence? We're talking very small business use here?

Bazongaloid, Mon 17 Jun 2013, 12:31,

It's difficult to say.
I know my company's been threatened with legal action by various software companies in the past. As for small business, I couldn't tell you, I have no experience of it. I can tell you that the threat of malware alone should be enough for IT to do something about it.

Tell me about it
Apparently I raped my way through 35GB more than my download allowance on my work account last month. I have no idea how, I though I was being quite careful. I've asked them how much I actually used just to check.
