What
is your favourite song?

I tend to flit between a few. at the moment I think it might be Echoes by Pink Floyd, although Funky Tonight by John Butler Trio is sitting at a close second.
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:05, 32 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
Pink Floyd is tops.
I'm trying hard not to overplay them, though.

Ever seen the synch that someone did between "Echoes" and 2001?
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:07, Reply)
Bargain
by The Who

Though I imagine the Beach Boys' God Only Knows, Pink Floyd's See Emily Play and Tom Waits' Walking Spanish might rival it.

Oh, and... *LONG LIST REMOVED FOR CONTRACTUAL REASONS*

Edit: @TRL - no, I haven't, but I'd imagine it's more convincing than synching Dark Side with The Wizard of Oz
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:08, Reply)
I can't overplay Floyd
otherwise I would've done it by now

I have seen that sync, I was very high when I watched it and found it very pleasing.

the song also inspired a song called Bright Ambassadors of Morning by Pure Reason Revolution, which is great.

A few Beach Boys songs are among my favourites, I'd have to say Do It Again and Sloop John B are best.

Good Vibrations while not listed as a favourite is one of the best songs ever though
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:10, Reply)
@Vipros
What you say is very true. I certainly couldn't overplay Echoes. But would that make Meddle your favourite Floyd album?
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:11, Reply)
Cripes, that's a toughie.
I'd say that Mr. Jones by Counting Crows is definitely up there.

Others in with a shout are Who Wants to Live Forever? by Queen, All My Life by the Foo Fighters, Plug In Baby by Muse, Holy Mountain by SOAD and Snooker Loopy by Chas and Dave.

EDIT: And Cocaine by Eric Clapton.
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:12, Reply)
ooh - my go
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
Wish You were Here - Pink Floyd
Rock & Roll - Led Zep
Big Log - Robert Plant
Northern Sky - Nick Drake
Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day
Mr Jones - Counting Crows

There will be more - but I'm in the middle of the reporting cycle and have to get some powerpointing done
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:12, Reply)
Wish you were here is my favourite album
the title song is my gf and my song (awww) and shine on your crazy diamond is simply amazing.

I do like different albums on different days though, so it depends.

that's why I love Pulse though, fantastic performances of many amazing songs

favouite non-floyd songs is more tricky, probably:
Led Zep - (really hard choice) Nobodies fault but mine
Warren G - regulate (sorry)
Audioslave - I am the highway
Monster Magnet - so many to choose from, Wall of fire, little bag of gloom, slap in the face, solid gold, space lord, look to your orb for the warning...

Floyd albums: I think I'd be tempted to go for Wish You Were Here myself,
I think I could certainly play that more times than Dark Side. But then I do have a special place in my heart for Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

Can't say I've heard Pulse. Perhaps I should. (Actually, thinking about it, I'm not sure I've heard anything they did as Floyd after Waters quit...)
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:15, Reply)
Pulse is a double live album
half a mixture of awesome tracks, and half Dark side of the moon

it is quite frankly, pant-wettingly good.

almost every track on it is better than the studio version in my opinion

post waters stuff: division bell is great, and momentary lapse of reason has some gems

At the moment I'm on a Jethro Tull kick.
Back when I was much younger, I went to college in the Adirondack Mountains for forestry. At that point of my life I had just discovered Jethro Tull's early stuff, and was listening to it a lot.

Now whenever I hear "Stand Up" or "Benefit" or "Living In The Past" I'm swept back to early autumn in the Adirondacks, sitting in my glassed-in porch on my beanbag with my bookcases around me, with soft fragrant breezes coming in the windows as Ian Anderson plays the flute as though blowing across the top of a beer bottle...

Wonderful stuff.

Too Drunk to Fuck
by The Dead Kennedys....

and God's Gift to Women by The Macc Lads...
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:21, Reply)
Mein Herz Brennt by Rammstein is a great song
hmm, maybe I shouldn't have started this thread, because now all I will do all afternoon is list a huge number of songs that I love....

Moondance by Van Morrison for example

or the song from the twist contest in Pulp Fiction

edit: Loon, I was saying in another post that I'm well into Jethro Tull at the moment. only just started listening to them a week ago. great stuff! am getting Aqualung for my birthday

I love stand up, it is the perfect album to drive home to after a rubbish day at work!!

@Tourettes
Too drunk to fuck.....FTW!

I can't remember them until someone posts one of my favorites.

This song was my theme song for my early thirties.
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:22, Reply)
For obvious reasons I can't say I have a very 'favourite' song...

A lot can depend on the memories a song provides, the way it makes you feel. there are some great songs that you want to listen to when you're either happy or sad.

But a couple that would have to be right up there for any occasion are:

'12 reasons why I love her' by My Life Story
'Landed' by Ben Folds
'Soul To Squeeze' by Red Hot Chili Peppers
'Dragging Me Down' By the Inspiral Carpets

If I carry on I might have a mix-tape on my hands...and considering my borderline violent protests against that particular QOTW...it just would not be cricket.
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:25, Reply)
Tull was ace before
they went all medieval with "Minstrel In The Gallery". Their early stuff is blues laced, odd, used unusual instruments and was overall very inventive and original.

"Hey! Santa! Pass us that bottle, will you?"
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:27, Reply)
@loon
Got so much Tull - vast majority of it on vynl. I have spend significant amounts of time justifying my penchant for Jethrol Tull. I still think Aqualung is fab.

Same thing with Hawkwind - first band I ever saw live (Worthing Assembly Halls 1985, supported by Dumpys Rusty Nuts)

Pooflake
Soul to squeeze is an amazing song!

thanks for reminding me. such great bass playing
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:28, Reply)
'Remember you're a Womble' - by Mike Batt

or perhaps 'Hateful' by the Clash
or 'Two Sevens Clash' by Culture
or 'Naive Melody (this must be the place) by Talking Heads
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:29, Reply)
.
Made of Stone - The Stone Roses, closely followed by
Down in the Tube Station at Midnight - The Jam
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:36, Reply)
Hmmm...
Pooflake, I salute you for "Dragging Me Down".

As for me, my favorite song will vary according to my mood. Right now, I'm enjoying some New Order on mp3 so Blue Monday and Confusion are on the list, however tomorrow it'll be something completely different.

Currently my other faves no particular order:

Happy Mondays - Loose Fit
William Orbit - Water From a Vine Leaf
Teardrop Explodes - Reward
....(will add if I can think of more)
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:41, Reply)
Depends on the time of the day
AM - Tool/The Mars Volta/Deftones/Porcupine Tree - usually opening tracks from lateralus/10000days/deftones/white pony/amputechture/bedlam in goliath/ deadwing/fear of a blank planet

PM - Tom Waits, Beirut, Sparklehorse, Lambchop, Ryan Adams type stuff

Saturday day is usually a good day to dig out the Babybird complete works before going out with Underworlds masterpiece of electro-dance music, 'Second Toughest In The Infants' ringing in my ears.

Sunday is all about Billy Holiday, Miles Davis, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson etc

Songs, not so much - too many to choose.
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:41, Reply)
Always a tricky question..
I have many, depending on my mood:

Good Times Bad Times by Led Zep is a firm favourite

Papua New Guinea by FSOL will always bring a smile to my face, even if it's been massively overplayed

Debaser by the Pixies is a great choice, TDW

Oh, there's so many and my mind isn't letting me remember them...
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:58, Reply)
Too difficult
As some have said, depends on the mood I’m in.

Kudos to Pooflake for ’12 reasons Why’ though – fucking excellent song. And ‘Dragging Me Down’. Class.

Erm, in no particular order:

Never Let Me Down Again – Depeche Mode (Actually, virtually any Mode track would be in there to be honest).
Temple of Love – The Sisters of Mercy
Heroes – Bowie
The Mercy Seat – Ultra Vivid Scene
225 – New Model Army
Your Silent Face – New Order
A Forest – The Cure
Bulletproof – Pop Will Eat Itself
Dead Souls – Joy Division
Police Truck – Dead Kennedys
Wail of Summer… And There Will Your Heart Be Also – Fields of the Nephilim (the floatiest track(s) ever committed to CD)

And many, many more…
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 14:59, Reply)
Depends on the mood...
Good mood: She Bangs The Drums by The Stone Roses
Bad mood: Transmission by Joy Division
Chilled mood: What Goes On by The Velvet Underground
Getting psyched for footy mood: Give The Drummer Some by The Ultramagnetic MCs
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 15:16, Reply)
cor blimey!
I'd have thought this would have cropped us as a QOTW by now. Anyway, here's a quick top 10 (subject to change on a daily basis an din particular order)

The Hunt (acoustic version): New Model Army
Enough is Enough: Chumbawamba
Barrel of a gun (HAG version): Levellers
Alcoholic: StarSailor
Noone knows: QOTSA
All I know: Screaming Trees
Black fingernails: Eskimo Joe
Only 19: The Herd
Turn away: Justin Sullivan
Garden: Pearl Jam

I think that should do for now
(, Thu 7 Aug 2008, 16:53, Reply)
I'm going to really, really try to narrow this down.
These are my current favourites, anyway.

Through the Fire and Flames by DragonForce.
Supermassive Black Hole by Muse.
Sweet Child O'Mine by GnR.
Three Little Birds by Bob Marley.
More Adventurous, Silver Lining, The Moneymaker, Portions For Foxes, Spectacular Views, A Man/Me/Then Jim, 15, Under The Blacklight and Wires and Waves by Rilo Kiley.
You Are What You Love by Jenny Lewis.
Dark Chest of Wonders by Nightwish.
Não Esperando by Kirsty MacColl.
Electric Eye and Hell Bent For Leather by Judas Priest.
This Moment and Inside The Fire by Disturbed.
I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister.
And, um, Bring It All Back by S Club 7.
