Bank Holiday blues
Morning all! It's holiday monday and I'm at work on what promises to be the quietest day of the year for taxis. Harumph!

I have the Mission Impossible theme tune on my MP3 player so I can pretend I'm on secret missions when I'm walking around Tesco.

Do you have any tunes you keep for special occasions?

And how was your weekend?
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 8:24, 126 replies, latest was 16 years ago)

Mine involved much chilling with daughter, watching the Grand Prix and a little harmonica practice. I also tried scanning some stuff from my sketchbook. I'm thinking about making a comic strip so I've been sketching some faces to mess with in photoshop when I get home next week.

Edit: I've just taken a booking to take Fun Lovin' Criminals to their gig today. Shame I won't be driving :(

weekend
I hibernated with Ben and Jerry and crap DVD's from the perpetual sale that is HMV!

In answer to your question I have millions of songs for different occasions. Spillers Groovejet will always put me in mind of summer, Blurs universal will always put me in the christmas mood. The gossip, and standing in the way of control is the last song I listen to before I go out. :)
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 8:45, Reply)
Morning kirst
Blur's End of a Century used to be my going-out song. I still play it occasionally.

See anything good on DVD?

I'm working today too. But it's my first day back, so I'm unfortunately a bit busy. Especially to think of tunes.

Work's a bugger.

Sharpe
My mate just gave me the box set of the Sharpe DVD so I spent the weekend watching Sean Bean single handedly win the Napoleonic Wars. It was absolutely brilliant.

Slither by Velvet Revolver always gets me up for a night out.

Morning
This is the first time since the bash I had the chance for a proper lie-in but only stayed in bed an extra half hour.

Today, I will go and visit the Psycho Buildings exhibition and spend time b3taing do some research for my job interviews.

As for tunes for special occasions, sometimes, I listen to Tori Amos´s Cornflake Girl if I´m doing something hack-ish on my computer.

Will write an account of the bash at some stage.
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 10:17, Reply)
Another tune for a special occasion
Whenever I´m on my computer and a housefly invades my workspace, I start repeatedly whistling the first few bars of
Tchaikovsky´s Nutcracker Overture
until I´ve chased the housefly out the window.
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 10:33, Reply)
New Shoes
I play that occasionally on my guitar. It gets right stuck in my head.
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 10:39, Reply)
New Shoes
I only discovered that tune coz I turned on the telly at just the right time. As you can gather, I´ve not paid much attention to the charts for the past 4.5 years.
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 10:43, Reply)
New Shoes?
I am completely divorced from popular culture. I have never heard the Umbrella song that I understand was at the top of the hit parade for most of last summer.

My walking about tune is the music from the finest video game known to man, Katamari Damacy. I pretend I can roll all the people up!

@spakka
What are these 'charts' you speak of?

Seriously though, I came back to work today after nearly three weeks off and all that was different was that I didn't recognise the music on the radio. Some girl singing a song asking her bloke to take off his clothes as she likes him, and herself, better when he's naked.

Fair enough, I thought.

oh, is it a bank holiday?

I'm not working today, but then, it is a Monday.

Erm, tunes to do stuff to? Not really... unless you can count the first "dies irae" of mozart's requiem whenever I get teh fear.

Woop!
It's awesome isn't it?

I really enjoyed Eagle even though it looks like it cost about £2.50 and a bottle of fake blood to make. But I watched Siege last night and it was awesome.

I've still got Justice and Waterloo (which I keep getting told is the best) to watch. As well as the new ones.

Oh incidentally there is another new one due out at the of September!
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 11:15, Reply)
Sharpe? I don't really get it.
Band of Brothers FTW!
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 11:15, Reply)

i thought they'd wound it up with Waterloo (which I thought was pretty poor, btw).

i like the one where there's loads of fighting.

Band of Brothers
Yeah I always wanted to watch that but kept missing it when it was on TV. I tried to pick it up half way through but just got confused. Might try and rent it then.

But yeah they made another one about a year or two ago when Sharpe was in India. I think he's a Sergeant or a private in it but it's apparently just the first two books combined (Sharpes Tiger and something else). Apparently it's not very good!

Which one is your favourite? They all have loads fighting in them! That's all the man does!
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 11:22, Reply)
heehee!
I liked the earlier ones, especially the ones with Major Ducos in because he was crreeeeeeepy.

If I had to pick ONE, probably Sharpe's company as it has Pete Postlethwaite in who is ace.

Yeah I just moved here from Glasgow via Edinburgh. By my logic it's the coldest place on Earth. Admittedly that's flawed logic but still.

I just went to Pittodrie for the first time a few weeks ago. Had a lovely day at the beach which culminated in me falling in the sea :(

@ No3l Good job on the thread. How's the Harmonica luvin' going?
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 14:43, Reply)
@Holy
sounds like good logic to me.

Glasgow's usually milder than Edinburgh, but wetter. A lot wetter. And full of phone shops. Edinburgh's colder, windier and minutely drier. I hate the rain (makes my hair curly) so I'll stay put.

Never actually been to the beach at Pittodrie, we only ever went for the football. I used to get the job of smuggling in the booze 'cos I looked small and innocent (then).
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 14:48, Reply)
@ WeeWitch
Yeah somebody told me Aberdeen is Scotlands driest town/city but it hasn't stopped raining since I got here. And good point about Glasgow being full of phone shops. Phone shops and junkies.

And don't talk to me about Aberdeen football! I'm a Rangers fan and none too happy after Saturdays debacle!
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 14:52, Reply)
It's a bit sad I suppose
But I do really love the harmonica. It's really expressive and makes the cats go MEOW!

Trouble is, I'm pretty shit at the moment so I try to practice out of earshot, so as not to make ears bleed. But it's fun, and that's what matters.

I can only play the theme from Popeye tho :-/
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 14:53, Reply)
Aye, forgot about
Glasgow's junkies. Mind you, we have our share here as well. And jakies who like to hang about and scare the tourists!

Rangers fan? Ah well, nobody's perfect. Better than a sheep-sh***er I suppose. Before you ask, I don't support a team. Hubby's a Hearts supporter, poor soul.

Edit No3I, I love the Harmonica, but can never make it sound like it should. My kids are better (they got proper ones for Chrimbo last year)

Nothing wrong Harmonica Luvin' mate
I love it. I'm a big Springsteen and Neil Young fan (which I think I said in one of your other threads) and love their use of the Harmonica. If I was in anyway musically able I would try and learn. I did have a saxophone but my dad sold it when I was wee without telling me :(

@ WeeWitch you're right it would be worse, I could be a Hibs fan. Bleurgh.

And Aberdeen junkies are bizzarre...one asked me for a fag the other day but I no idea what he was saying (still don't get the accent) I ended up walking away slightly bemused as to what just happened.

Once, when we were all pretentious students still we tried to live by the code of Random Acts of Kindness, and in that spirit we went and bought all the belmont street homweless tea and a slice of chocolate cake. We missed one out, him having arrived late to this little party and he went proper mental at us, cos he didn't get some too!

On a side note, only one person in aberdeen is actually homeless, ansd he chooses to be. The average beggar in aberdeen makes 28k per year

Visiting scotland is one of my pipe dreams
where I hitch-hike around the coast of the UK in a month for char-i-dee. I put some plans together a couple of years ago but I've not got the courage to do it. I think the Scottish highlands would be the most difficult part of the trip and I factored in at least 14 days for Scotland.
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 16:23, Reply)
Yeah
That's what I love about Scotland, if you want some peace and quiet you can jump in the car/bus/train and a few hours later be in the arse end of nowhere surrounded by beautiful country side.

Saying that due to where I grew up my life expectancy is something like 68 :(
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 16:24, Reply)
@ No3l
You should do it, I'd sponsor you. As long as you learnt a Springsteen song on the harmonica obviously. Well worth doing though.

I've walked some of the West Highland way before and it's pretty amazing.
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 16:26, Reply)
A mate of mine said it couldn't be done
So I thought "I bet it can!"

Maybe I'll do it sometime. I put a whole load of notes together including kit, stop-off targets, etc. I thought I might write a book, podcast or film it... the thought gives me teh good fear but I'm not financially stable at the mo so it'll have to wait til I can afford to not work for a month =o/

Don't be ashamed of your musical tastes.
When I was that age I was into the Jam and punk and also had a fondness for 70's disco.

One of my favourite dance records is Colonel Abraham's, Trapped.

Look it up on youtube. It's a great tune.

I really have listened to some bad acts
but I enjoyed them at the time and that's what counts. I suppose it all contributed to my musical taste now, so it's all good. I had a massive music collection until a couple of months ago, my musical hard disk snuffed it and I lost the lot :(

This is why I prefer to buy cds instead of download them.
I'm getting into blues music at the moment. I've always had a soft spot for it but never really bothered to listen to it properly.

Blues, nice.
Saw B B King last year... he was Just Amazing. I'm two years in on a hip hop journey with no sign of fading. Still listen to plenty of other stuff but hip hop has hold of me :)

Wow! BB King. I'm jealous.
I like hip hop but not the gangsta stuff. I quite like Missy Elliot and Run DMC etc.

I'm just coming out of a 15 year relationship with dance music. I just listen to it now when I'm exercising. I'm getting back into singer/songwriters and some of the stuff I used to listen to before I started clubbing.
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 20:26, Reply)
I can't stand most gangsta stuff
There's always exceptions tho :) but for real hip hop I like stuff like Dilated Peoples, Jurassic 5, Talib Kweli etc.

As for singer/songwriters, Jack Johnson, Newton Faulkner, Rory McLeod etc. The latter really hits the spot.

Dilated peoples FTW!
Newton Faulkner I have and Ray Lamontagne is a favorite of mine.

Heheh
I suppose I should say "thankyou" =o]

Basically, I just don't listen to shit full stop. It actually really drags me down going to "cheese night" at the local because it seriously offends my ears.

I suppose that's pretty pompous, isn't it? *shrugs* *grins*

Edit: May I offer you some of this?

I guess cheesy music has it's place in the world : )
Music is so subjective that I try not to judge what other people listen to.

Kids need something to listen to as their growing up. You can't expect a 7 year old to get into heavy rock or indie or the blues. They need a little fun stuff to boogie too and some people just never grow out of that.

As long as their happy!

My teenage sister used to be a big fan of R&B and I would squirm each time I thought about it. She's got much more wide ranging tastes now.

I remember my mum
enjoyed a lot of the music I listened to as a kid (except for most of Cypress Hill :) so I hope I can be as accomodating to my kiddo as mum was to me.

Frustratingly, some of the stuff she listens to is quite good, if complete pop.

And... I'll never deny someone their music taste, in the same way I'll never deny someone their religion - do what you will, and be happy =o]

Christ... I just compared music to religion! I've seen the light!

OMG!
Cypress Hill. I was trying to remember the name of that group. That's the kind of rap music I liked a lot.

Are you insane in the membrane?
Uplifting funky funny hardcore gangsta rap! I used to have all their stuff.

And their stuff was amazing when bonged off your face. Not that I do that any more ;)

Now I prefer my rappers firmly set in the realms of reality, not some pseudo-ghetto!
(, Mon 25 Aug 2008, 21:30, Reply)
I don't think there are many rappers living in reality once they hit paydirt.
Right! I'm off to bed.

Early to bed and early to rise
Makes you healthy, wealthy and a boring cunt.

Been nice speaking to you.

Catch you tomorrow : )

Evening
Anyone still about?

I had a fun day today moving some of my assorted crap up to my new flat. Now I have a duvet.

My stomach also seems broken :( How bad.

Evenin all
Went to see the Psycho Buildings exhibition today. It was interesting but some parts of it were a bit too pretentious (especially one of the films). While I was there, I had an unexpected encounter with the sister of the friend I´m staying with and her boyfriend. We chatted a bit and went our separate ways.

What a chance encounter
Just saw the photos of the bash, looks like everyone had fun.

Stupid living far, far away.

Will look at the pics soon
first need to do a bit of gazzing.

BTW: How come you Scotland people held your bash so far in the future?
(, Tue 26 Aug 2008, 0:03, Reply)
I'm not sure
I presume whoever organised it chose that date for some reason, and didn't just decide to have it way in the future.
