that this heralds the end of our beautiful relationship my dear Badger.
I simply cannot carry on with someone who dislikes Marmite.

The food of evil.
Ban it. Now.
Oh, and parsnips. Don't like them either
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:31, Reply)

especially honey-roasted ones.
*goes into parsnip-related daydream*

how many more of Vipros' favourite foods I can diss by accident?
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:33, Reply)

Vipros is our mixed view on marmite really going to tear us apart? *dramatic gestures*
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:33, Reply)

it can probably bear the brunt of you not liking marmite, but tell me, how do you feel about cucumbers and bananas?
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:34, Reply)

so let's chuck another foodstuff into the discussion -
Tapioca
Love it or hate it?
I'd rather starve than eat it.
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:36, Reply)

But I love banoffee pie!
I don't really like cucumber either but I will eat it
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:36, Reply)

I think we are safe
for the record, cucumbers and bananas both repulse me.
although strangely enough I can manage to eat banoffee pie. must be because the rest of it is so awesome it makes up for having banana in it

when he was babysitting the toddler version of me , apparently he used to enjoy watching my little face screw up when the taste hit me . Now I love it and he's dead , so who's laughing now ?

I love peaches. Fresh, not tinned, mind.

Next you will be saying you don't like mango
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:39, Reply)

that this bilge hasn't made it across the pond. It sounds like it would taste like hobo jizz.
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:40, Reply)

that made me laugh like a bastard
Loon: you must seek out some marmite and try it.
it is a fact that you will either despise it more than anything you've ever tasted, or it will become your main reason for continued existence
either way, you have to find out
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:41, Reply)

but I love tarama salarta!
only the tacky pink stuff though.
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:42, Reply)

smells worse than it tastes. That ain't easy.
Edit: hlt, I know life in the borders isn't exactly exciting, but how the heck do you know that?
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:44, Reply)

I looove gouda cheese. I am quite a cheese fan really....
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:45, Reply)

(gruyere smells exactly like feet) but I will eat parmesan in stuff
actually I'll eat most cheese in stuff (not blue cheese though, bleurgh)
fondue is the business. my mate is swiss and has his family recipe framed on the wall. it's so good
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:46, Reply)

marmite = nastiest tasting substance on planet.
ergo hobo jizz is less nasty.
you didn't think I'd tried it do you?
mr tulip is not a hobo in any way whatsoever.

how rebellious am I?
My little cat just absolutely shit herself. She's sprawled across the couch, and my mobile is resting on the arm of said couch.
A text message just came in and she nearly went into orbit. She's now giving me "that" look. The one that suggests if I die one night, she'll eat me.

My least favorite foodstuff? Mashed potatoes.
Yeuch.

Further to a mini discussion the other day about steak, I've just picked up £7.80 worth of fillet steak for £2.20. So I'll be cooking it as per guidance from the other day. I'll report back later.
My, aren't we all culinaryary today?
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:51, Reply)

I hear that there's some stuff called Bovoril or something like that which also has homeless scrotal qualities about it, with essence of Anne Widdicombe's nadgers added for savor.
You lot eat far worse things than Cheez Whiz.
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:52, Reply)

Bovril is alright, I like to drink it at the footy.
It used to be beef extract, but they made it vegetarian so basically it is a Marmite competitor now.
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:54, Reply)

is also awesome
it's like concentrated salty steak in a jar
what's not to like?
note: I'm pretty sure they've put the beef back in bovril
yep

( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:54, Reply)

Bovril is amazing too!
(really good for hangovers actually)

I have no idea what Cheez Whiz is.
Can it be as bad as Kraft Cheesy pasta I wonder?
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:55, Reply)

essential to any healthy diet.
It's the best way to get your RDA of beefy goodness without raised cholesteral.

( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:56, Reply)

I prefer actual steak, if I'm to taste beef. Unless it's a good stew.
Liquid steak sounds like the quintessence of fail.
EDIT: Cheez Whiz is basically Velveeta in a jar- runny, fluorescent yellow-orange stuff that tastes like it has the same relation to cheese that Yorkies have to wolves. Rather nasty, but it has its uses at times.
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 15:56, Reply)

Bovril is good. On fluffy white toast with a smattering of butter... *drools*
I don't like it when it's a drink, though...

Marmite AND cheesy pasta?
Edit: TGB, it's bright orange. You can't achieve that colour with cheese.
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:01, Reply)

nope. kraft cheesy pasta tastes absolutely nothing like conventional macaroni cheese. nothing at all :)
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:01, Reply)

proper mash is ace.
try whole grain mustard mash, cheesy mash, garlic mash or rustic mash (this involves being lazy and mashing potatoes with the skins on)
EDITED for less marshes
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:02, Reply)

of not liking mashed potatoes
don't know what was going on there
now I love to put other stuff in them, like roasted garlic, or chives, or spring onions and soy sauce
@NakedApe: agreed. I had rustic parmesan mash with my meatballs last night

best way to have this is an enormous pile of mash in the middle of your plate and the sausages stuck in it, so it looks like a plate of food out of the Beano

balti chicken pilaf unfortunately...
@NakedApe: dear god, my stomach is about to eat itself after that description
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:08, Reply)

if you whizz up some cauliflower in the blender with butter and cream it makes yummy, but less stodgy, mash.
and butternut squash mash with mascarpone cheese is almost indecently tasty.
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:09, Reply)

my mum did her very own special "lumpy" mash with nothing added. No butter, no milk, nothing.
I only started liking it when I started making my own and adding things to spice it up. Also gravy. Mum treated gravy powder like an endangered species. I make it almost thick enough to stand the spoon in!
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:09, Reply)

That your healthy-eating brain screams 'Noooooo' at but is just so nice...
Tinned meatballs
Tinned burgers in gravy
(made out of the rejected 'meat' from the Whiskas factory, but schlurpy gravy)
Mince & Tatties
(Sole vegetable aside from the tatties being the onion)
Corned beef hash
Stovies
(Higher fat content than a spermwhale butty)
Any more?
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:09, Reply)

well, more of a puree really
good with slow roast belly pork and roast shallots (had it with prunes too. this was good)
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:10, Reply)

Can be delicious, but beware I once had mince fried with an onion, that was all.
I also once had mince fried with red wine, that was also rubbish.
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:11, Reply)

our mothers went to the same cooking school!
You forgot stew - the cheapest cut of meat with the taste boiled out of it!
Edit: DiT, tonight, if you missed the announcement earlier, is chips (proper ones, homemade), beefburgers (again proper homemade big thick burgers with onion and Worcester sauce) and some sweetcorn. If you can get here in the next 20 minutes, you can have some too.

In Embra in the 70s/80s that was what you ate. She is actually a superb cook, coming from a farming family helps, but we were very poor in those days.
She also likes brawn (wobble).
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:16, Reply)

Filet mignon, cooked so that the center is still red but warm, with mashed potatoes (with sour cream, butter, salt, pepper and some parmesan mixed in), broccoli lightly steamed so it's still crunchy with butter and lemon on it, and a bottle of Chimay Grande Reserve to go with it. A little highland malt to serve as dessert, and I could die a happy man.
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:16, Reply)

Tartiflette is wonderful, I only discovered it last month.
Got a brilliant recipe for it, anyone wants it, GAZ me

Still don't like kidneys, though.
How about some stewed tripe?

But I am going to my friends and there is home made banoffee pie *is a happy badger*
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:21, Reply)

Malt loaf
fucking ace with butter.
then I decided to toast it. it's amazing. cut a thick slice of soreen (any variety although cinnamon one is nicest) and whack it in the toaster (you'll need tongs to get the bugger out again)
It goes deliciously crispy on the outside and soft and gooey on the inside.
mmmm
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:22, Reply)

I'm not going to make it! :(
And it sounded so nice too! :)
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:23, Reply)

That I've kept was to eat new things.
Sometimes horrid, mostly enlightening and delicious!
It's incredible how much food prejudice the average person has that is unfounded or out of date.

Well if you missed it from the other thread I highly recommend horse :)
And if you have never had it haggis is yummy :)

In a stew is nice I was going to try steaks but I was debating if it would taste better cooked medium rare like steak or more well done like venison.
Edit: I read your sig as you wanting badgers and mash!
( , Thu 28 Aug 2008, 16:46, Reply)

It was a very long time ago! I would ask your friendly butcher waht he suggests for the particular cut.
