The day thread is over
400 posts long.
Mr Bin is cooking dinner, all though he claims a Korma isn't a curry.

What are you having for dinner and what isn't it?

(, Wed 24 Sep 2008, 18:04, 186 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
meatballs
in a roasted vegetable and tomato sauce with several varieties of pasta

I've got pie and mash for dinner and I'm currently reading about different types of computer clusters on wikipedia to help me add yet more things to my to do list...

Well...
I've got some gunpowder.
And some copper pipe.

And no other plans tonight.
(, Wed 24 Sep 2008, 18:13, Reply)
Well Mrs L
I had to get rid of all the rubbish in it, hoover it all out, hoover the boot and clean under the carpet, clean all the insides of the doors (and the bits where they close on to the body), clean the mats, clean the dash, wash it, polish it then I back to blacked all the trim.

Tis the cleanest shiniest car in all of Badgerland

surely the only reason to clean a car that much
is to sell it?

What are his reasons for not thinking Korma is a curry?
I have had stew and a bananananananananananana.
(, Wed 24 Sep 2008, 18:28, Reply)
He thinks that a korma is not a curry
because it doesn't have any vegetables in it.
And he's from the East Midlands and believes that the only decent curry is a balti.
(, Wed 24 Sep 2008, 18:35, Reply)
fair enough :-)
on a completely different note, I'd like to recommend the dish I cooked last night

it's undramatically called Garlic Beef, but should more realistically called Hardcore Pepper, Garlic and Vinegar Beef.

Serves 4
Get a piece of well trimmed beef skirt, about 600g.
Grind up a tablespoon of black peppercorns in a pestle and mortar then add 3-4 large clove of garlic and grind to a paste. then add a couple of tablespoons of red wine vinegar and mix up with a pinch of salt.

rub this into the beef and leave it in the fridge for a couple of hours (no more)

rub the marinade off and season the beef with salt.

get a pan or griddle fucking hot and sear it.

Rare is best, so 5 minutes on each side.

if it's a thick piece of beef it might need 5 minutes in an oven too.

Serve with chunky chips and green beans.

devour

I'm a bit of a twitcher, I've got a bird table etc... I had a strange thing half an hour ago - a bird that's not in any of my books landed just outside my patio doors. OK
It was somewhere between magpie and seagull in shape and size. It was kestrel brown with blue flashes on its wings at rest and during flight, and its most distinguishing feature was a bulbous end-beak which was bright yellow.

It looked like a gull but I could be wrong... the similarity to a magpie made me think it was a Jay but apparently not.
(, Wed 24 Sep 2008, 19:20, Reply)
Oh...
I read the first line.
And though "That's a Jay".

Then you said it isn't.
The beak does indeed sound wrong.
Hmmm... How well did you see it?
Because there's one other explanation, which'll sound stupid...
(, Wed 24 Sep 2008, 19:22, Reply)
Incredibly fucking well
About three metres, through my patio doors. I thought it was carrying a monkey-nut to start with cos the beak was so odd... and I'd say it was bigger than any Jay I've managed to find in books and online so far.

Unless it was fat on Birds Custard, which would explain both the size and beak :)
(, Wed 24 Sep 2008, 19:27, Reply)
Hmmm...
I think it was a jay.

The description is too close to anything else, other than a female Mallard :p

I must've been carrying something.

There're a lot of slugs about at this time of year... *shrugs*
(, Wed 24 Sep 2008, 19:30, Reply)
Now I've never seen a Jay
so it'd be another one to cross off the (rathersadalthoughIdon'tcareatall) list...

But my god, it was big. Bigger than the biggest magpie I've seen, and I've got thirteen that visit my table :)

I'll take your word for it tho. It's such a close match, I'd be silly to deny it... still got that 1% doubt...

Start All Over by Kulashaker FTW!

I'm procrastinating
And reading the Guiness World Records 2009 book I was given for my birthday. If anybody can explain why the 2009 book has been released in 2008 you'd satiate my curiosity. Is that a proper use of the word satiate?

Anyway. Expect random records from me. The first being this:

"Gerold Weschenmoser (Germany) had aquired 5121 different masks by 22 January 2008 (he even has one of his own face!). He began collecting in 1957."
(, Wed 24 Sep 2008, 19:43, Reply)
At Captain V
I would just use 'sate' I think.
But more likely 'sated' in the past tense.

Fastest time to earn a big mac
"The banking giant UBS (Switzerland) has created the Big Mac Index to estimate how long the average person from 70 countries would have to work to earn enough money to buy a Big Mac. The worldwide average is 35 minutes, but in Japan the average time required is just 10 minutes. The index measure purchasing power by eliminating variables such as exchange rates. In Bogota, Columbia, workers must work an average of 97 minutes in order to buy a Big Mac, illustrating that the purchase power in Central and South America is a third of that of a typical North American city."

I'll try to refrain from spamming this stuff too much as I'm sure it'll get boring pretty fast.

when he's awake?
Is he like some kind of human fire alarm?
(, Thu 25 Sep 2008, 1:33, Reply)
I've moved back to live with my parents for a while
They'd be upset if they knew I smoked.
So... Keepin' it secret :D
(, Thu 25 Sep 2008, 1:46, Reply)
Yeah I know what that's like
I started smoking in my mid teens and I think I was in my mid twenties before I smoked openly in front of my mum. She knew I did it by then, but I knew it upset her.

Useful tip: when waiting for a lift from someone who you don't want to catch you smoking and they are late, light one up. It invariably facilitates their arrival.
(, Thu 25 Sep 2008, 1:57, Reply)
Same with busses :)
If your bus isn't there, and you light up, then it'll arrive.
Every damn time!
(, Thu 25 Sep 2008, 2:02, Reply)
Mostly.
But not the 5.37 from Lancaster.

Waiting for that fucker in the dead of winter drove me to become the Lilac Avenger...
(, Thu 25 Sep 2008, 2:05, Reply)
Lilac Avenger?
Pray, tell!
(, Thu 25 Sep 2008, 2:07, Reply)
It's not as exciting as it sounds
Although it could be, I spose, if I made more effort with my superheroing.

I froze my arse off waiting for that bus, and at the end of a long working day it was too miserable for words.
Hats and scarves weren't enough, and I decided a balaclava was needed.
Not wanting to risk the bus driver flooring it in terror when I embarked, and depriving me of my means to reach warmth, I opted against wearing my black-with-two-eyeholes one and made a lully mauve balaclava with eskimo fur round the eyes.
The name 'Lilac Avenger' stuck.
(, Thu 25 Sep 2008, 2:19, Reply)
Hahaha!
Cool!

I just tend to get cold instead :p
