So I've got this internet Radio jobbie

I've had a bloody lovely afternoon teaching science. How has your day been?

it's been pretty good thanks Mrs L
glad to hear you've been enjoying teaching!
(, Wed 3 Dec 2008, 17:47, Reply)
Hey Mrs B, Vipros
It's a cold night here, and I have much work to do. But for now, it is dinner time, and that means watching E4. Woot.

You all had fun days? What type of science were you teaching?
(, Wed 3 Dec 2008, 17:52, Reply)
Well Vipros
They were sensible year 6s.

I turned up to do supply and the teacher says, "I've not had a chance to write a lesson plan. Here is the box of equipment and they need to do an experiment to find out which is the most waterproof material."
So that is what I said to the class. This is what we've got, that is what you want to find out, how shall we do it?
I got them to tell me how to make a fair test, how to write it up the lot. They all did a really good experiment and sensibly too.

Not in year 5
we just learn about our bits and what changes when we get older, i.e. getting the blob / stiffies.

We learn what happens when you apply one to the other in year 6.
(, Wed 3 Dec 2008, 18:25, Reply)
Oh.
Oh well. I might learn something anyway!

Stiffy?

Haven't heard it called that for years!
(, Wed 3 Dec 2008, 18:49, Reply)
Stiffy
Many moons ago, when 'mass storage' meant a 5.25" floppy disk holding 720kB of data or whatever, you had two main forms of data storage. The aforesaid floppy, or one of those new fangled expensive 'hard disks'.

So when the 3.5" disk came in, it was kind of rigid, and half way between floppy and hard...so it was suggested that it should be referred to as a stiffy.

This stuck at my place of employment, and for years afterwards the phrase "Have you got a stiffy?" could be heard frequently when asking to borrow a data storage medium.
(, Wed 3 Dec 2008, 18:53, Reply)
@K2
That actually made me giggle. I think I'd have fit in well at your place of employment:D

Well said, rubberduck
I'm no great shakes as a driver, but I do find driving in snow quite fun, if I'm careful about it.

I came out of the car park at work yesterday, which leads onto a very quiet road in a new business development with no tenants, and the road was all icy. So I tweaked the handbrake, and with a little bit of steering input, managed to get my car going sideways. Quite slowly, but it was fun.

I didn't notice the bloke watching me though, shaking his head...

Edit: K2k6. Snow is one of the main reasons I have a rear wheel drive car :) First sign of the white stuff and the traction control gets switched off, and I traverse every roundabout and bend in a nice white sideways flurry.

Bonus points are awarded for making impossible-looking tyre tracks ;)

Kaol
Be careful with the Land Rover - don't be one of the idiots who confuse traction with grip :)

The fact that you're still in once piece (and I'm assuming the Land Rover is) though tells me you're not one of those idiots.
(, Wed 3 Dec 2008, 21:42, Reply)
Don't you worry about that,
Mr. Duck!
Where I live is very isolated, so the roads don't get gritted. At all.

So yeah, you learn to drive in the ice, or you end up in a ditch.
(, Wed 3 Dec 2008, 21:46, Reply)
Good to hear Mr Kaol
There's something intensely satisfying about drifting a Land Rover. It feels almost like you've beaten the god of physics :)

I'm guessing that you've probably found that out for yourself by the sounds of it...

A mate of mine works for Porsche as a demo driver, but before that he worked at Knockhill race circuit. I followed him home one night as he was driving his Daewoo(!) and we came to a roundabout. He didn't brake from 60mph, but got round it anyway! A little bit of left foot braking to bring him into the exit and it was done.

I didn't attempt to replicate the manoeuvre, but watched from a safe distance, and speed, behind! Quite impressive.
(, Wed 3 Dec 2008, 21:54, Reply)
Yes!
It's great :D

Although my favourite thing at the moment is as follows:

We've got a gravel drive here, with a turning circle which you can just about get around, full lock, in the Jag.
I've perfected the art of going around it mostly sideways :D

I'm emotionally distraught from that incident.
But I'm not one to hold a grudge and it was a stupid mistake anyway. Ho hum.

Just got a reply from le eligible bachelorette. It turns out I told her that God gave me a bottle of wine. *hangs head*

Night Clendrix!
Sleep tight.

Cap/TGB: do I want to hear this story?
(, Wed 3 Dec 2008, 23:23, Reply)
There was
just a small slapping incident...
(, Wed 3 Dec 2008, 23:24, Reply)
Well then
Before I'm made to learn anything else I'm going to head to bed. It'll also prevent me chatting nonsense about divine wine and what not.

Night folks. Hopefully when I speak to you next I'll be wearing more clothes. If I'm not it means I'm at work wearing only a pair of boxers. Not good.
(, Wed 3 Dec 2008, 23:25, Reply)
Have you all gone to bed?
I've been working on my portfolio and been sent on cat claw trimming missions this evening. There were tasty beverages on offer, so it wasn't a tough mission :)

Which season are you up to Badger? We did a drinking game of it a while ago. Everytime someone mentioned Lupus we had to take a shot. That got too easy, so we did it for every time House sneered at someone and managed about 2 episodes ,)

the second season :)

Haha House sneering would get me wasted after about 5 minutes!
