I'll say that again just to make sure you got it
DONT BUY FROM PC WORLD!
what's he going to use it for?

PC World is overpriced rubbish sold by idiots, usually to idiots, and with an over-expensive warranty.
What kind of stuff does he want the machine for?

he's retired
and yes, i know, but it's his choice, not mine

nice price and half decent machines that will run whatever you want.

Remember that just over £300 will get you a decent entry level laptop (i.e. a Toshiba one) which might be more convenient - desktops actually seem to have risen in price since the mania for buying laptops!
I've always built my own desktops instead of buying them, but I use nothing but HP/Compaq desktops at work and would recommend those over a Dell any day. The Fujitsus are alright for cheap machines as well. Don't go near Acer.
Edit: @ tzambissamo, they sell just about every brand of laptop I've ever heard of! Recommending the whole shop isn't much help...

1. Not funny (what the link actually links to)
2. It's not a great laptop anyway (copy and pasted link). You seriously advocating an AMD processor? And advocating paying more for it than the C2D?

You could buy an old 1.5ghz box with a fresh copy XP on it for fifty quid off Bob down the pub, and it'd suit someone who just uses Word and the internet and likes to print photos occasionally.
Modern PCs are value for money but he won't use 10% of its potential.

But new ones are nice for the warranty, and particularly for laptops you know the battery will be new.
When you can get a _decent_, brand new laptop for £300 or thereabouts, it makes buying new less worthwhile than it was even a few years ago.

I've had mine built by Novatech (they had a cool "pick your components" engine on their website) and the latest by Computerplanet.
Just stick a www. and a .co.uk on them. I did it because, like your dad, I already had a monitor, keyboard and mouse that were fine. And speakers.
So I just got a new box. It has perspex cut-outs and it glows green inside!
I'm not the world's most techy guy but I know what I like.

But I'll post it anyway in case it helps somebody else: www.ecgo.co.uk/
Not bought from them personally but for the money I can't think of anything better for the kind of purpose your Dad has for a PC.

I've bought a few towers from these people: www.powerc.com and never had any problems
