Seeing as many of you fellows are tech-savvy, I wonder if you could tell me whether mobile broadband is worthwhile ?

Where you're going, what your typical browsing is. Mobile doesn't tend to have much of a bandwidth allowance and speed is very dependent on where you are.
Generally, unless you can't get a landline connection or you move around a lot and need to be connected, it's not worth it.

my accommodation over the next two years is going to be a mix of non-landline mainland,inner-city locations and suburbs.i need t'internet to survive ^^ but some kind of fixed location is not possible....

My mobile contract allows for unlimited data included (or £7.50/month, I think, on O2). I have a S60 based nokia phone, with some software that turns it into a mobile hotspot (ad-hoc network).
Put that together and all my devices can get online wherever I am.

I've heard of this being done quite a lot, and would probably say it's the best idea. Check your contract will allow though.

Empirical evidence for this, that networks are prepared to give away hardware if you'll take a contract for mobile broadband would seem to suggest that they might be a con.

from 02 and I browse b3ta all day at work on it. But it sucks compared to cable based broadband.

because I think £15 / month for up to 3Gbyte of usage is not a bad deal at all.
Yes, 3G speeds are never "broadband" but...it's more than adequate for web-browsing and e-mail, as is the 3Gbyte allowance.
I used mine a lot last year when doing lots of travelling on the train.
I'm with Vodaphone, who seem all right.
I would shop around for the best contract. The price-point seems static enough nowadays - most deals are £15 / month - it's the length of contract you want to be careful with.
I'd avoid 3 like the plague though.
Gaz me if you want more info
