Help and suggestions required people!
I need to sort out a website putting together all the stuff I've had published together with potential for adding images and..

FFS - you all know what a website is!

Anyway, I want something cheap, simple and straightforward - I would say rather like me but the website doesn't need large floral patterns and regular flouncing.

So...suggestions for hosts and the easiest way to set this up - I do need it to look vaguely professional.

I know that the long answer is to dig out my copy of Dreamweaver and MTFU but I have neither the time nor the desire or abilities to immerse myself in php/html for the next few months.

And I'm lazy.

You lot are all creative, tell me what to do.

MTFU

Draw out your 'website' onto sheets of A4 paper
sellotape them onto various PC monitors of people you want to see your 'site'. It will save on development and hosting costs.

Now this I like
do this instead :)

Could always use a blogspot thing.
I did one for my comic, and it was pretty damn easy.
For example:
kaolblack.blogspot.com/

I have a blogspot
I know...I'm crap at all of this.

Oh...
Dunno in that case!
I mean, I know how to make a website.
But I'm too busy to make one for you :p

That's my problem too
that and the fact I can't be arsed.

Oh god I'm soooo crap!
FFS I'm even pissing myself off now.

*MTFU*!!!

I'll give you a hand if you want.
But first I need to find free hosting for sites I need to migrate as googlepages is becoming defunct, so if anyone knows of advert-free, free hosting space, please yell.

(Edit: not blog space as I need to be able to upload files rather than just edit templated pages.)

I love you
That party sized bag of Wethers Originals is yours.

hurrah!
That's at least 35 potential attempts at seduction right there!

Fasthosts do exactly what you need for like £4/month.
I can help you setup a Wordpress blog on it, job done =)
(, Mon 6 Jul 2009, 12:01, Reply)
£4 a month is too steep. Googlepages was free.

If the site is going to be used for any
sort of content that might get one work, demonstrate skillz etc then paying £50 / year for reliable, good hosting is hardly a big sacrifice.

FastHosts are shit - read "The Register" if you don't believe me.

It amazes me that people aren't prepared to pay a small amount of money for what is basically their shop window to the world.

None of this applies if it's "personal project" type of stuff of course, but anything that might generate income deserves hosting that is more reliable than FastHosts or any other such budget providers...

The stuff I have
is charity stuff and a web site for a friend who has no money, hence budget needs. I'd host it at work but it would probably breach the JANET Acceptable Use Policy.

Chickenlady's stuff, however, might be fine for that. Do you have any web space at the Uni, chickenlady?
(, Mon 6 Jul 2009, 12:21, Reply)
If you have charity stuff
I am happy to host it, depending on how much space it takes up.
(, Mon 6 Jul 2009, 12:23, Reply)
oh that's cool, thanks, that's a lovely offer.
It's not very big. It's an old site, the event has passed, but we wanted to keep the site live as a record of it.

I'm going to have a look around for space today as I have other stuff to move. I'll see how I get on.

I'm not sure how much longer I'll have a job there :(
I was told a couple of months back that they wanted me to teach more classes and then last week the news came through about heavy cuts.

I'm hoping I'll still be teaching two classes but that could be it :(

More reason to sort out a webpage and raise my profile.

I think you might have a point here
I'm also coming around to the view that if I spend some money on it then I'll feel duty bound to keep it up and actually use it instead of it just sitting there like a damp pudding.

I see it in the same light as fat people and Weightwatchers - you're duty bound to diet because you're paying ££ each week to be mocked.

Well..
godaddy has pretty fair prices and deals plus you can buy domains, with the option of linux or windows servers.
i havn't tried myself personally, but i know a friend who had the service

This is just one of the things I love about b3ta
Load of suggestions and some of them are even genuine!

Cheering me up no end.

I remember when
Internet accounts came with webspace. Oh wait, they still do.
(, Mon 6 Jul 2009, 12:25, Reply)
I can host
on my webserver if you so wish.

I can set you up with a template site for nothing on top of the hosting costs.

Or, if you want a pretty one-off site, I can put you in touch with some awesome webdesigners, but they aren't that cheap.
