I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume that you aren't a sonar-monkey on a submarine.
Is it personal interest thing?

Think how fucking stupid you'd look if you found yourself in command of a submarine and didn't know how the SONAR worked.
You fucking retard, I hope this happens to you and you learn a short sharp lesson in preparation as you struggle to differentiate the ambiguous contacts as the Russian attack subs close in on your flailing spazmarine.

...why is the "Target" always called a "Solution"?
( , Wed 8 Jul 2009, 14:23, Reply)

The targets are usually called contacts, I believe.

The solution is the calculation that arrises from the bearing, speed, distance etc of the contact.
The process is sometimes called 'stacking the dots'

A "solution" seems a mouthful when fighter pilots use the term "lock-on" for exactly the same thing.

Oh, I see. It's subject to extrapolation.
