Hello Dear QOTWers! I need some advice... [UNIX/LINUX Related]
I'm still here, buwaha! *Rubs hands together*
How are we all today? It's just peachy here in Canada...

For the techies: Now, as you all know I'm currently looking for work. I've got three interviews in the UK soon and all of them want me to do some sort of "Aptitude Test". Are there any linux/unix sysadmins out there that have had to do the same thing? If so, what's it like?

For the non techies: Post pictures of kittums and let me know of a bash that you will all be attending in London. I'll come along

(Also, thanks legless, you've been a great help recently)

Hey Axai
sorry to hear you're still looking for work, but cool that it's in the UK though so we'll get to see you again.

If you're here at the end of November it's my birthday bash and quite a few people have signed up to it

Hey becky!
Yeah, it sucks to be looking for work but as my flight to the UK nears, I've had alot more interview dates set, so things are looking up. Hency why im shitting myself about the technical aptitude test ;)

OOoo birthday bash! I'll be here and I'll pop along and say hi :)

Google gave me this, seems helpful
Anything there that they might ask you to show them practically would be my starting point in your situation.

Ahhh
This is gold, thanks. I'll be taking a read though this :)

I'm reading it (properly) too now but just for fun
There is something very wrong with me =/

I'd have to agree
I like his approach but he mentions he's interviewing a Junior sysadmin. The questions he's asking are quite advanced. I feel sorry for any junior being interviewed by him!

Are you of a linux background or even techy? :)
(, Tue 11 Aug 2009, 21:31, Reply)
It'd be a scary interview
But it'd make me really want the job as they clearly take things very seriously (In the sense of doing things properly rather than taking themselves seriously).

I don't have a linux background as far as sysadmin is concerned but I am sitting at a machine running Xubuntu and love everything tech related. My role at work is changing to formalise the DBA and VBA (excel) I do and include python and sysadmin work. Depending on how I think that'll work for me in the long term I'll either stick with that or consider doing a compsci degree.

Thats pretty cool, actually
I have to admit, seeing these questions has made me google more.
I'm making a list of things that I'm not quite sure on, so i can answer all their trivia. My linux knowledge is pretty damned good but there are things that I've not picked up due to google telling me everything *doh*

I love ubuntu, but I also love mac's. I like the mixture of UNIX and pretty front end. My main "falling point" is that I'm not much of a bash scripter. I code in PHP and a bit of python.

If you get python under your belt you should be set. Im also considering compsci stuff but experience will do you better in the UK its been said

Macs....
If you lived with CHCB (which would be weird) you'd frequently hear me cursing "fucking macs". I like them in some ways but I spend most of my time frustrated by how arcane the interfaces are (although the GUIs are very pretty).

In my case I think doing compsci will probably be the better option as things like interface design and OS development particularly interest me.

Leave the Macs alone!
Why, when I was your age I was using DEC Alphas and Sun stations. I then served my time with Linux so I am now entitled to a nice shiny Mac, best of all the halfway houses. And you can use the terminal window for everything if you consider things arcane. You're just bitter cos you ain't got root.

Macs are be all of the cool. makes it easy for me to use a 'puter.
that is all.
edit: hi there chcb!

Hi buddy
glad you're okay, I was wondering where you had disappeared to. Hope the job hunting goes well.

Hey dude
I'm doing good, so all is sunny and cheerful. Job hunting isn't *bad* considering the climate but it could be better.

How have you been recently?
(, Tue 11 Aug 2009, 21:25, Reply)
Very well
got engaged at christmas. Getting married is expensive. And stressful. And it's almost a whole year away yet
(, Tue 11 Aug 2009, 21:36, Reply)
Ahh isn't it sweet!
Congrats dude :) I hope you will be having a post-wedding bash ;)
Ive decided that my marriage isnt going to be expensive, but the honeymoon will be ;)
